You may have seen yesterday that the Motorola Atrix was successfully rooted. However, there seems to be a caveat… According to XDA member adlx.xda, it looks like while the dump of the system is not encrypted, which was some of our dev’s fear, the whole partition is signed by Motorola, which goes right in hand with the manufacturer’s practice for other devices such as the Defy and others. What this means, in essence, is that the files in the root cannot be replaced by custom ones like recovery. So, even though the process of rooting was successful, the device is still locked to a certain extent. Motorola’s methods seem to be a thorn in the hacker community’s side as they are very much hellbent on not letting people mod their devices.
Do you have anything that you would be able to add to this project? Maybe you found something that could greatly help our devs crack this new riddle. Please drop a comment or contribute to the project if you have the know-how.
The files are not encrypted as they can be splitted, though like in the Defy thos partitions are signed by Motorola. Which means you can’t replace the content of the partition with a custom content (custom boot, custom recovery)…
