In an interesting turn of events on the whole HTC vs Conflipper saga, we have learned some very interesting news directly from the developer himself (which he later posted in shipped-roms.com). Conflipper said that he has spoken with HTC and had reached yet another agreement on the kind of content that he can (and cannot) have on his site. In essence, the company has asked the dev to take down any test files or carrier files, and this is where it gets tricky. Most roms are from carriers (there really aren’t that many plain Jane stock, carrier-free rom versions floating around). Having said this, HTC’s rationale for wanting them taken down was that the roms from carriers have stuff both from HTC as well as the carrier, and while they may or may not mind the distribution of their stuff, they cannot have the carrier’s proprietary software being distributed left and right.
The dev has already removed the test files and he says that HTC is also working towards putting a list together of the stuff that they want out of shipped-roms.com. On the good side of the news, HTC seems happy with conflipper’s fast response and cooperation with them and have told him not to worry about the original July 1st deadline, which appeared in the original threat. What does this mean to the commoner? It means that most roms are not only still up, but will be freely available (no password protection whatsoever).
One last thing, and one for which our community could support the dev, is that he has asked HTC if he could become a licensed partner of HTC (to be able to distribute the stuff in a legal manner). While they didn’t say “yes” right away, they did say that it was a viable alternative.
Shipped-ROMS is staying online.
Just got off phone with HTC, they did not want Test files on there. or Carrier files. Because something that is made for TMobile USA, is approved by both HTC and TMobile USA. This ROM will then feature programs that are made by TMobile.
