Anybody still remember SPB Mobile Shell, that insanely popular home screen replacement back in the heyday of Windows Mobile? Many people preferred it over other home screens plugins, like HTC’s own TouchFLO/Manila, because it was so customizable. Many of the most popular threads in our Windows Mobile Themes subforum are about Mobile Shell. The company behind it, SPB, also developed lots of other high-quality applications for Windows Mobile, and eventually, with its decreasing populartiy, expanded into Android, iOS and other operating systems as well.
Now, SPB has been acquired by Yandex, the most popular search engine in Russia. This . . . READ ON »
It’s hard to believe just how much the smartphone space has changed since that phone, the HTC HD2, was released in November 2009, two years ago. It was one of the last Windows Mobile devices, but it eventually got ports for both Android and Windows Phone 7. With this active developer support and a thriving community, it went on to become the most popular device in xda-developers history, and was voted as the best HTC device of both 2009 and 2010 in our forums.
Now, it’s November 2011, exactly two years later. Time to recapitulate the story of this extraordinary . . . READ ON »

There are several devices blessed with Windows Mobile out there that have the capability to run ports of Android with ease. These devices have severe hardware limitations when it comes to trying to simulate the user experience (no G-sensor, non-functional gps drivers, etc). Well, for those of you who have not made the jump over to a newer generation Android device and would like to have a similar experience to those who will get ICS, then check out the package that XDA member lesscro put together for you. ICS 4.0 combines not only visuals but also some functionality that will . . . READ ON »
We like to feature Windows Mobile apps from time to time on our Portal. After all, they are precursors of what we have today on most devices. Note taking apps has been a primordial breed of apps that has spawned countless variants of itself across all known platforms. Many vary in style, design, and functionality, and this one that was created by XDA Recognized Developer TangoChen seems to somewhat fuse newer styles with older technology. Well-Note for Windows Mobile is a Windows Phone styled note taking app, which features the side scrolling screens, big letter, and hidden menus, that every . . . READ ON »

If your Windows Mobile device runs Manila, you likely know that Manila’s PNG files lose quality from compression.
XDA Senior Member Nixeus noted that Recognized Developer and Moderator Chainfire created a CFC GUI app, and although it is possible to create a CFC in the command line to compress in HQ, not many people know how to do that.
Nixeus improved on this by keeping the HQ of the compressed PNG using Chainfire’s GUI app.
The program uses PngOptimizerCL to optimize the PNG without quality loss, and then uses CFC.exe to convert the optimized PNG to Manila files.

The HTC Kaiser. Before I could get it, I remember I wanted it. I used to keep looking at the full specifications’ page at gsmarena and staring at the specs of it in utter disbelief. It was aesthetically pleasing, it had an awesome camera, and it had a slide out keyboard. And if that wasn’t enough the screen tilted upwards. This feature was a major selling point of the phone.
The first rumours of the handset arrived late 2006. Whispers of GPS were swirling making people want more info. Gradually, as news arrived that it was realized that this was . . . READ ON »
If you are old enough to remember the great HTC Shift or even better you still have one, this will be of your interest. XDA member djwillis told us about a guide to install the Windows 8 preview on the Shift. According to the source, no part of the installation process is complicated, it mostly came down to installing the right drivers in the right order, so if you follow the instructions it should be ok.
You will need to consider:
- Wipe the Shift’s HDD. Don’t bother with an upgrade from Windows 7. Not worth the hassle
- You . . . READ ON »
It´s no secret that XDA TV is becoming more popular every day. We love everything from seeing SassiBob showing a new app, Samcaplat reviewing things with his nice British accent, or azrienoch´s editorials telling what others don´t dare say. In order to compliment the full experience, XDA member nathanpc presents a web application to see XDA TV.
As it uses WebKit, it should work on any operating system including Android, Symbian, Windows Phone 7, modern desktop browsers, and iOS.
The developer is waiting for your reports, so please let him know about any malfunction or bug present on version . . . READ ON »
It seems that lately we have seen a surge in activity from what was believed to be a dying area on XDA, Windows Mobile. If you have ever wanted to get rid of the weird arrangement of icons on the start menu for 6.5.x Roms, XDA Recognized Developer ultrashot has something that you will likely enjoy. This does not require you to install any third party launcher or anything of that sort, it is a plain and simple mod to the already existing Start Menu. So, if you were longing to get rid of what is left of the honeycomb . . . READ ON »
The recent XDA TV article by Azrienoch & cajunflavouredbob reminded me of the old days, when the HTC logo looked like this. Because of this, I was reminded of some of the old things released that really changed how we use and view our devices and also changed what we came to expect from the device manufacturers.
The first game changer I want to look at is HTC Home. This was the first incarnation of what would eventually come to be HTC Sense. It ran on windows mobile as a plug-in for the home screen and instead of displaying widgets . . . READ ON »
If you haven’t checked out Xianpeng’s Game Boy Advance emulator for Windows Mobile, XDA forum member #LG# has brought our attention to this great freeware.
The XDA member states that the without sound enabled, it works almost perfectly on his BENQ E72 with 230 MHz OMAP processor and approx 20MB of RAM. On how Blue Angel, his exact words were ‘amazing’!
Advantages of the emulator include:
