Comprehensive Guide To Successfully Manipulating Troublesome ICS .APKs

Application package files or APKs for short, are something that I’m sure most of you are familiar with, whether you’re a Developer or a Themer you probably spend a fair bit of time tinkering with them. However, if you’ve spent much time editing APKs since the release of Ice Cream Sandwich then you may well have encountered a few which refused to play ball but thanks to XDA member memnoc we now know why.

It would seem that there are a few rogue APK files which refuse to either decompile or recompile with ApkTool, probably the most commonly used tool for manipulating APKs. If you have found yourself stumped by one of these problematic files then turn your attention to memnoc’s comprehensive guide to overcoming the issue.

As well as thoroughly explaining all the necessary steps involved in the process of decompiling the APK then properly recompiling and signing it, the guide also includes a selection of helpful screen shots to guarantee that you’re able to get into those pesky problem files (and put them back together again). It also lists all of the required components you will need to accomplish this i.e. Java, JDK, JRE, Android SDK and of course ApkTool

According to memnoc the problem with manipulating these particular files is as follows;

The reason why is that since 1.4.2 version, apktool generate java code while recompiling process is going on, and this lead to errors that 9/10 makes decompile process fail.”

So there you have it, head on over to the tutorial thread found here and be sure to thank memnoc for this most useful of guides.

Thanks to samuel2706 for the tip.

But it'll be a long time...
