The Weekly Q&A: Week 20

The Weekly Q&A: Week 20

On this weeks Q&A we have selected 5 questions found in the forum. Although they may not be specific questions that are relative to you, they may serve a purpose to someone else with the same question.

Q:So, I moved all the apps on the SD, but is still not enough.
How can I free some memory? I could delete the cache of the older upgrade or something else?

A:Do you have pictures and videos? If so, check if they are on the SD card and not on your internal memory. Cleaning your cache helps, and try deleting your text messages threads.

A: Network lock is totally unconnected to ROM lock. changing one will not affect the other.

Q: I have a standard HTC HD2 I want to flash. I am upto date with the official updates. Everytime I try to flash with a custom rom I follow the rom loader instructions but I keep getting a error. This is Error 262 communications error. Don’t understand what’s going on or what I am doing wrong.

A: Try to put phone into bootloader yourself before you start. Connect usb and only then run your flash. When it first times out, don’t touch phone just rerun the flash. Try different usb ports. Always mention in your posts if using 64bit win.

I know this problem isn’t related to the rom or froyo itself, as I’ve tried both tazz’s rom and kaos’s. Plus, I haven’t had this problem on froyo before. Any ideas?

A: You probably do not have the correct APN files anymore. These let your phone know which towers to connect to. You may have used a ROM that was based on a ROM from another carrier (like Sprint). Try this:
1. Boot into recovery and make a nandroid backup.
2. Download a ROM with the correct APN files, like Plain Jane (basically a stock ROM with root). One version of Plain Jane can be found here
3. Do a full data wipe in recovery and then install the Plain Jane ROM.
4. Reboot into the new ROM.
5. Make sure 3G and Sync is on and you should get all your missed text messages, once everything is finished syncing.
6. On the market, grab the app “APN Backup & Restore”.
7. Run APN Backup & Restore and bachup your APNs. The app will create a folder on you SD card with the APN files. Hold on to those files and if you wipe your SD, make sure you back them up somewhere.
8. Then you can restore to your nandroid backup or load any other ROM. The just run “APN Backup & Restore” and restore you APNs.
I hope this helps you.

Q: Hello, I am sorta getting the hang of this rooting process but I have one question…I see new versions of unrevoked are periodically released, do I need to do anything with those? I rooted my phone a while back and thus used an older unrevoked. Will using a new unrevoked do anything for me?

A: If you are Unrevoked Forever and have s-off, there is no need to update. Unrevoked puts updates out when Google drops an update that closed the loop hole on a previous version.
