Ok folks, so this is our first weekly Q&A article. This will consist of 5 Questions and Answers, picked from the forums. Here we go….
Q ‘What are the advantages and disadvantages of rooting?’
A This is a question often asked, and there are many answers, some of which will be down to personal preference, but we will try to stick to the facts.
The advantages of rooting are that your Android device gets superuser privileges – similar to having access to the administrative account on your PC, rather than having a limited user account, and hence gaining access to features that a default user account cannot. Once rooted, you are free to install and make use of the multitude of apps that require root access, and try out custom ROMs.
Disadvantages are that once you choose to root, what happens to your device is your responsibility and you must be willing to accept that. The main disadvantage though is that when a new OTA update is released, if you want to remain rooted, you will have to wait for one of the talented developers to work their magic.

Q ‘Cannot install new Google Search and Voice Search on CM6?’
A A lot of forum members appear to be experiencing difficulty in installing the two new Google apps when running the CM6 ROM, getting the ‘Installation Unsuccessful’ triangles. The solution is to remove the old applications and download and install the new ones from the Market. Instructions on to do this can be found in this post.

Q ‘How easy is it to self install an i9000 screen replacement?’
A Well, the digitizer and AMOLED screens are available to purchase on eBay, much like most mobile devices. However, it appears that installing the Samsung Galaxy i9000 screen is a little more complicated than other devices. Removing the damaged screen from your device is a combination of popping off the screen cable and using brute force! You’ll need a sharp knife and lots of replacement glue as the digitizer and AMOLED screen are glued to the chassis. The whole process takes around 3 hours and the verdict is that ‘it is a pain, but doable’.

Q ‘Are there GPS issues on the Samsung Vibrant?’
A A poll in the forums shows that the majority (41%) of XDA members that voted, experience problems with the GPS in that it sometimes works but it’s never accurate. Unfortunately, there doesn’t appear to be a fix posted for this, but you can follow the thread to keep updated in the link below.
