Why Intel believes the "AI PC" is critical to its success

We interviewed Robert Hallock, Senior Director of Technical Marketing at Intel, to talk about what the future of AI looks like to Intel.

Intel has been going through a bit of a transformation of sorts in the last few months. Pushed by the improvements of chip competitor AMD and the AI dominance of Nvidia, the company has put its foot down and committed to supporting both AI and improving its fabrication nodes at a breakneck pace. Intel doesn't just want to ensure its processors are powerful, but it also wants them to be the smartest in the business.

Intel's Battlemage GPUs will support uncompressed 8K video at 144Hz

It may come sooner than we first thought.

With Intel striving to produce one of the best graphics cards of 2024, it faces some stiff competition with both AMD and Nvidia. Its big splash in the GPU market is a card codenamed "Battlemage," and Intel has been pretty good at keeping a lid on what this new card can manage. And while it's rumored that Battlemage may release sometime before Black Friday, we now know that it will support uncompressed 8K video at 144Hz.

Best RAM for Intel Core i5-14600K in 2024

Power your dream gaming PC with these data modules

To make the most of the Intel Core i5-14600K, either the best DDR4 or DDR5 RAM will need to be used. System memory is used by the processor to store data for quicker access as these modules are capable of much higher bandwidth than mechanical hard drives or even the fastest M.2 NVMe solid-state drives. The more memory available, the more data the PC will be able to store before having to resort to slower storage drives. For the Core i5-14600K, I'd recommend 32GB as a healthy amount for a new PC.

Mini PCs - Is Intel or AMD Better?

Choosing between Intel or AMD for a Mini PC will come down what tasks you plan on using it for.

As technology advances and more people are working from home, mini PCs are becoming a much more viable option. Not only do they take up less space, but the specs have gotten so much better. You can pretty much get a full-on desktop PC in a case smaller than a box of cereal these days. With so many mini PCs available, how do you know which is best for you?

Aftermarket tinkering on Android phones isn't as prominent as it once used to be. That's not to say you can't root your Android phone or install a custom ROM like LineageOS on it. You can still tinker and customize your phone to a large extent as long as you have the interest and the technical know-how. Most — if not all — aftermarket tinkering requires you to connect your Android smartphone to a computer using a USB cable, so you can use tools like the Android Debug Bridge (ADB) to interact with the device.

Best motherboards for Intel Core i7-14700K

Build the PC of your dreams with these motherboards

Intel's Core i7-14700K is one of the company's 14th-gen processors released in 2023. It's a mighty chip and the successor to the 12th and 13th-gen Core i7 CPUs that support the same 600 and 700-series motherboards. Like with other 14th-gen Intel chips, you can save cash and use an older motherboard. If you happen to be building a new system from scratch or are moving from an older Intel or AMD processor, I've rounded up the best motherboards for the Intel Core i7-14700K.

ASUS's latest BIOS update is here to fix Intel i9 crashes, but there is a catch

Here comes an easy fix from ASUS for the widely spread Intel Core i9 crashes!

ASUS has to come to the rescue of its users who are facing crashing issues with Intel Core i9-14900K and 13900K Raptor Lake processors by issuing a BIOS update, currently being rolled out to Z790 motherboards. While the release note doesn’t explicitly say anything about fixing those issues, ASUS cleverly stated that the latest BIOS version "1202" includes an "Intel Baseline Profile option" to let users revert to the Intel factory default settings.

Intel has an uphill battle with the launch of Arrow Lake, the company's next-gen architecture for desktop-class processors. AMD's Ryzen 7000 series was a hit with the media and general public with many leaping onto the AM5 platform to take advantage of Zen 4's improved efficiency and reliable performance. Intel's 14th-gen CPUs aren't terrible, they're just not as good as they could be from Intel.

Intel's first-generation Alchemist family of Arc GPUs that landed on our test bench couldn't really leave a lasting impression on us. The Alchemist chip looked great on paper, but it turned out to be just average, at best. The driver issues truly took the GPU down, and it couldn't stand a chance as a match for Nvidia's GeForce RTX and AMD's Radeon models at that time.

Forget about software, because the race to AI dominance is really about chipmaking

All the biggest names in AI and technology are fighting behind the scenes to make the best AI chips.

It's easy to see the consumer-level applications for artificial intelligence in 2024, such as software tools like OpenAI's ChatGPT or hardware products like Humane's AI Pin. However, these are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to AI development. Whether you're looking at AI-based software or hardware, their success can all be traced back to chipmaking. Some of these products and services leverage on-device AI processing, and others offload the processing requirements to cloud servers. Either way, custom silicon is the backbone of AI, and that's why every major tech company is engaging in a behind-the-scenes race to make the best AI processors for great AI PCs and cloud servers alike.

3 reasons why I underclock my processor

With CPUs using more and more power, there are a few reasons why it might make sense to underclock your processor.

CPUs are very powerful these days, so powerful that in a lot of instances, most people don't actually need the full power of what their CPU can offer them. In the wake of Intel's Core i9 bugs which I solved with underclocking, I wanted to talk about the other, more practical reasons why I underclock my processor. They're all fairly basic, but may extend the longevity of your computer and, hopefully, even impact your wallet, too.

We may have more details about Intel's upcoming Lunar Lake chips

More details are emerging about Intel’s Lunar Lake microprocessors, including naming and first chips.

More details are emerging about Intel’s potentially incumbent-busting Lunar Lake microprocessors. They will likely be used in the Microsoft Windows operating system, but others will use them too. The low-power labeled chips will reportedly combine memory with processing, both within the form factor. A physical size reduction over traditional silicon will enable lighter and thinner laptops. Lower power consumption means smaller, and thus lighter batteries.

The CPU (central processing unit) is one of the most important components inside a PC. It's what largely determines how much processing power will be available for tasks such as gaming and running software. Choosing the right processor is a complex decision to make, but buying the best CPU is crucial as it plays an intricate role in deciding how well your PC performs on different workloads, how well it runs games, and more. There's a good argument to make for focusing your PC on Intel right now, as even on the laptop side, you'll find many of the best RTX 4090 laptops with Intel chips.

Over the last couple of months, reports have been pouring in from Intel Core i9-14900K owners who have said that they're experiencing crashes and blue screens of death in multiple applications and on multiple computers. I've been investigating the problem for a couple of months, and I can confirm that there is a problem that Intel is working on identifying currently. With games like Tekken 8 drawing additional attention to the issue, more and more users have reported random blue screens of death along with other applications inexplicably crashing too.
