Welcome to xda-developers.com
This site is about certain PDA-phones, made by a firm called HTC in Taiwan. Their makers named them 'Wallaby', 'Himalaya', 'Blue Angel', 'Wizard' and 'TyTN', but almost nobody knows them by those names. The mobile provider O2 sells them under the brand-name 'XDA', and that's what we had in our hands first. They're also known as Qtek, MDA, SX-56, Hermes and many, many other names.

Since we develop software for it, we need information, and nobody seemed eager or ready to give us what we needed. So we 'reverse-engineered' the devices, found a lot of information, and shared it with the world. But as our site grew we realised that lots of ordinary users were also suffering from a lack of support. They started using the xda-developers forum to communicate and before long the forum was as much a user forum as it was a developer forum.

We hope that you will enjoy this site and find it as useful as we do. We encourage you to donate or otherwise support this site. Of course absolutely all proceeds from donations will benefit this community.

Done with WM6.5? Try WM 6.5.1

Our mailbox was filled with news alerts about the new WM6.5.1 which supposedly is to be found here. Turns out that some of the custom ROMs found here are unofficially called WM 6.5.1, the source for all this news seems to be Long Zhengs blog Istartedsometing:

However, what you might not know is that Microsoft has already up its sleeves another revision of Windows Mobile 6 – unofficially dubbed by the enthusiast community as 6.5.1 – that’s faster, sleeker, more touch-friendly and in my opinion, a much better upgrade than 6.5.
Those familiar with the Windows Phone modding scene might have seen since late August, builds numbered 23xxx and up started surfacing on the web. Those brave enough to have installed these builds began noticing a slew of updates to the user-experience of Windows Mobile that is arguably necessary but missing from WM6.5.
For example, the “Start button” and “Close” button have all been moved to the more accessible lower toolbar, freeing up the entire top row for status icons which is now thinner. Tapping on this row now expands a tray-like widget with large icons that provide quick access to system notifications and settings.
On the UI side, controls including buttons, checkboxes, radio buttons and the like have all been remastered, finally replacing the Windows 3.1-like graphics with modernized anti-aliased equivalents. Tabs have also been replace with a new “pivot” control that sits at the top of the screen where users can flick and toggle between.
Finally, even more recent builds include a new contacts application that is much more touch-friendly with larger buttons (albeit with a few bugs).
With all these changes and more already implemented and polished, I have to wonder why faced with inevitable criticism that WM6.5 is not enough of an improvement Microsoft didn’t hold off until all these changes were implemented for the official Windows Phone relaunch.
Until Windows Mobile 7, this is probably as good as it’s going to get on Windows Mobile 6. If you too are feeling a little adventurous, take a look over at XDA-developers forums to see if there’s a 6.5.1 ROM for your device already.

Have been Using 23064 for over a month and it has improved my WM experience, The improvements in the GUI are amazing and necessary to compete with the iPhone. All what remains is the amazing release of WM7 which details and images have already been leaked, and is reported to support "Multi-touch". Build 23071 is the near RTM release and can be found in the ROM development section for; SE Xperia, Blackstone (HD), HTC Diamond 1&2 ect.

Some Thoughts & Observations

From what I have seen (at least in the Athena, Topaz & Rhodium threads) the really major visual changes started in builds above 2302x, Seems to be devided feelings about the new UI, some cooks have chosen to stay with the more stable 23016 that has the beginnings of the new UI components. Other cooks have been producing some very nice & usable roms with the newer 230xx builds. It should be noted that there are apps that do not play well with the new visual components including the beloved HTC Task Manager. I hapen to like the new visual direction, it takes some getting used to but it's very finger friendly and I think it looks good. (JMHO)

Cheers

WinMobile 7 with MS OTA updates...yeah right..!!!

Just saw the article up on JKontherun that references this page... but I have to say the speculated-upon option for OTA updates to the WinMo OS is one option I would NEVER turn on.... (bad enough allowing auto updates in XP or 7... quite a few of those break functionality that worked fine before I pushed the OK button.... and MSs Security essentials fully enables auto updates without even asking you... Thank God for TrueImage...!!! )

I'm looking to 6.5.whatever releases to provide improvements in functionality, but more importantly stability in the first place. I use my phone for work as well as for downtime, so I have a list of critical apps that I really need to work, and some that are optional.

I think it'd be great if there was a way to post/add/update apps that work with specific builds or not within the WIKI or preferably as a table within the specific ROM being posted....

Gotta tell you though, without XDAdevs site I'd still be on winmo5 something and seriously brain damaged... so keep up the great work guys!!!!

Hmm.... so when's WinMo 8 coming out then....
