How to change emojis on Android, with or without root access

Want new emojis on your Android phone? We explain how you can change emojis on your device, with or without root access.

Emojis are great because they enhance modern digital communication by adding emotions and expressions. They also evolve over time as the Unicode Consortium frequently adds new ones. Google delivers the Unicode-ratified set of emojis to Android phones with software updates, so you don't have to go hunting for them separately. But since these updates take time to reach all Android phones, some of them are left behind with older emojis. Some OEMs also replace the default Android emoji set with their own version, again creating a disparity between what’s available on your phone versus your friend's phone.

One of the biggest reasons Android enthusiasts keep coming to the XDA forums is to find new ways to theme their phone. Luckily, for devices which aren’t heavily locked down, you can go ahead and make widespread modifications, including those that are originated from a different OEM Android skin altogether. XDA Senior Member RKBD felt the same way and wanted to spice up the emoji experience. Thanks to his work, you can now start using emojis from Samsung's Android 13-based One UI 5 on any device if you have root access.

Google has released a new emoji font pack that attempts to scale things back. The inspiration harks back to a simpler time when the world of communication wasn't as complex and offered a total of only 176 emojis. This is quite a contrast compared to now, with over 3,633 emoji in the Unicode Standard, as of September 2021. To make this a reality, Google had to take its Noto Emoji Color fonts and strip away the colors. Doing so created new problems that the team had to overcome. This is how Noto Emoji was born.

Another round of Android betas is here. During Google I/O 2021, Google introduced to the world a closer look at how Android 12, the upcoming version of Android, will look like and function once it's out. While Android 12 has been out as a developer preview for a while, we hadn't get seen the full extent of the UI changes that were coming with it. And Android 12 is one of the most outstanding updates in several years. It brings more radical improvements than even Android Pie, released in 2018, did, in terms of both functionality and looks. Material You is the most radical redesign to the original Material Design guidelines since they were first introduced back in 2014 with Android 5.0 Lollipop. There are other changes, however, that have gone unnoticed. One of them is a new emoji revamp.

Google typically introduces a new set of emojis with each Android system update. This year, the company will likely introduce the new emojis introduced in Unicode's Emoji 13.1 set with Android 12. While these new emojis haven't made an appearance on any Android 12 Developer Preview builds released so far, you can now start using them on older versions of Android if you have a rooted device.

[Update: Merged] Google prepares to decouple new emojis from Android system updates

Google is preparing to decouple new emojis from Android 12 system updates, making it easier to introduce new emojis on phones.

Emojis have become an integral part of our informal expression. These tiny graphical assets add emotions, intention, and character to mere words. The frequent addition of new emojis to the Unicode standard is testimony to their popularity. Whenever Unicode gets new emojis, we need to wait for an OS upgrade to reach our phones to bring support for the emoji, before we can actually make them a part of our internet lingo. Google seems to prepare to make this easier, as a few commits indicate that it is working on decoupling new emojis from Android system updates.

Google is expected to roll out the first stable build of Android 11 later this year in September. As with previous iterations, the upcoming release will bring a ton of new features to the operating system, most of which we've already seen in recent Android 11 developer preview and beta releases. Along with noteworthy features like new media controls, native screen recorder, and bubble notifications, Android 11 will also include 62 new emoji that were announced earlier this year as part of Unicode 13. The Gboard keyboard app has already added support for the new emoji in preparation for the Android 11 release. And now, according to a recent report from Engadget, the app is also getting a new emoji shortcuts bar to help you use these new emoji quickly.

Among the many additions in Android 11 is support for the new emojis included in Unicode 13, announced earlier this year. New emojis are great, but it can take a while for everyone to get them on a system level. Thankfully, keyboard apps can add support at any time, and that's exactly what Gboard is doing.

Unicode 13 was announced earlier this year, bringing along 62 new emojis (117, if you count the variations separately) to devices. While their inclusion may not seem like a big deal on the surface, these graphical assets have become an integral part of expression on the internet and through our devices. They add emotions, intentions, and character to mere words. And the frequent addition of newer emojis is testimony to their importance in modern-day communication and expression. It should then be no surprise to learn that the 62 emojis added in Unicode 13 were added to the Android 11 Beta 1. You can install Android 11 Beta 1 on supported devices to access these emojis. But there is also an easier way to install and experience these emojis on your existing software, presuming you have root.

Emoji have radically changed the way we communicate online. They're the eventual evolutions to the emoticons we used to have between the late 90s and the early 2000s, and since they were initially conceived, they have evolved into something that can accurately represent our emotions or visually represent anything we want to express. They get extended every year, with a number of new emoji being added to every year's new Unicode release and new versions of every major OS (Android, iOS, Windows) adding support for these new Unicode releases. Now, we're getting to know the latest Unicode release, Unicode, 13, with over 62 new emoji being added for this year.

One of the biggest casualties with the Android Oreo update was Google's infamous blob emoji (a.k.a. "blobmoji"). The update introduced a redesigned emoji pack with more traditional round faces. Many of the fan-favorite critters were updated as well. Some people were happy to see the blobs get the ax, but a lot of Android users are still upset. Google is now bringing them back as a sticker pack in Gboard and Android Messages.

Android Oreo Blob Emoji Substratum
How to get Blob Emojis in Whatsapp and Telegram on Android Oreo

Thanks to rootless Substratum theme manager, we can finally bring back the beloved blob emojis in Android Oreo - at least for Whatsapp and Telegram.

Not every new feature in Android Oreo has been met with fanfare. The decision to include a blinding bright light theme earned the ire of many, but luckily there's an app for that. Another polarizing change to Google's latest tasty dessert-themed OS is the emoji redesign. Emojis are a fun way to express your emotions over text, and many have grown fond of Google's iconic blob emojis. Unfortunately for those users, the only way to bring back the blob is to root their phone and change the system font file. That isn't very accessible for most people, but thankfully there's now a compromise available due to the release of the Substratum theme engine for unrooted Android Oreo devices.

The Unicode Consortium has officially announced Unicode 10. The new version adds 8,518 characters including 56 new emoji characters, a set of four new scripts, and new symbols. Currently, the standard consists of a whopping total of 136,690 characters.
