flash image gui

One thing that goes hand in hand with flashing ROMs is flashing kernels and, of course, flashing the recoveries needed in order to flash ROMs and kernels. For some, it’s a process that makes some people nervous as it’s different from the typical Android interface.

For users of the HTC Amaze 4g, they now have another option. Thanks to XDA Recognized Developer joeykrim, there is now an application that allows for the flashing of kernels and recovery images straight from the booted up Android user interface. joeykrim further explains:

This android application, FlashImageGUI, is basically a GUI interface for the linux binary, flash_image provided by google in AOSP for loading custom kernels and recovery images onto the phone.
This app allows the flashing of kernels and custom recovery images in normal android mode!

The installation instructions are pretty straightforward, and installs basically like any other apk. Just put it on your sd card and use your favorite file manager to install.

With support for other phones as well, this project is on the verge of taking off as a popular alternative to flashing kernels and recoveries in a custom recovery. For additional information, download links and a full list of supported devices, you can find all that and more in the app thread.

I wrote an article two days ago slating HTCdev and their tardiness in GPL compliance. I was harsh and unforgiving, and quite right too. We’re not here to play devil’s advocate or apologise on their behalf. The article listed phones the kernel source code hadn’t been published for. Some devices remain unpublished, but a small collection have been published today, including the Rezound, Amaze, Explorer, and Desire S.

Well done, HTC, hopefully we’ll see full GPL compliance soon. Please visit www.htcdev.com to download your required resources.
