Whether you love it or hate it, HTC Sense has a habit of making an appearance on unexpected devices. The latest to join the club is the Samsung Galaxy Gio. No you didn’t misread that, I said Galaxy Gio.
XDA Senior Member voetbalremco is the person behind this. As you may expect, there are bugs so don’t go trying to use this as your daily driver just yet. While issues with RIL and SD Card detection have been fixed, there are still some remaining issues with WiFi, Bluetooth, sound, sensors, and so on. However, it does boot and offer basic functionality, even if only to marvel at the wonder (or travesty, depending on your point of view) that is Sense on a Samsung device.
The ROM itself is based on the latest Chinese RUU intended for the HTC Explorer, which means it’s a Sense 3.5 ROM based on Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread. As you’d expect, SuperUser and BusyBox come pre-installed, and multiple languages are supported. Voetbalremco would like to hear from any other developers out there who may be able to contribute to this project and make it suitable for daily use.
If you think you can help out or just want to try this out for yourself, head over to the original thread.

Themers working with HTC Sense ROMs currently face a major problem. They are unable to modify most images used by Sense 3.5 and beyond because of HTC’s method of storing images inside proprietary m10 files. Unfortunately, the images are not stored as JPG or PNG. Instead, they are encoded with an unknown algorithm.
Previously, M10Tools by XDA Recognized Developers Flemmard and Diamondback would be used to decode these images. However, with the release of Sense 3.5, this no longer was an option, as HTC added new image formats that are not compatible with the software package.
After trying unsuccessfully to decode the new image formats, Recognized Developer and Forum Moderator Diamondback has decided to seek help from other developers in the community to find a solution to the M10 image format woes. Luckily, there is progress being made to find a solution. For starters, Diamondback has compiled a list of what we know so far:
We don’t have any hard facts for these image types but looking at the “old” image types, we can guess a few things:
- The images are in a format the GPU can render directly (Like s3tc, ATC, QTC, etc) (At least this used to be the case, might have changed)
- Images are most likely compressed. The ratio between assumed size (based on meta data) and the actual data size indicates some heavy compression. The data itself obviously looks compressed too.
- There are no headers or any other help. It is just raw data.
- We don’t know exactly how the decoded images actually look like, so we can’t say what the images display. However, due to latest archievements we “might” know this for images from Sense 3.5 and 3.6 if needed.
- The handling software side is all in a few libs and NOT in smali / java, so we can’t look for stuff there, however we have the libs, so if someone is pro with assembler he might find out something
So which image types are the ones in question? As compiled by Diamondback:
Here is a list of image type we already know ( remember, we don’t know where the numbers come from, might be some enum in native code or so)
- Type 4: Raw RGB
- Type 6: Raw RGBA (still used rather often)
- Type 8: ATC RGB (doesn’t seem to be used at all anymore)
- Type 9: ATC RGBA Explicit (doesn’t seem to be used at all anymore)
As you can see we got types WITH and WITHOUT alpha encoding.
Here is the list of UNKNOWN formats:
- Type 13 (used way less than type 14, so maybe no alpha?)
- Type 14 (this is the most used type, so I assume this one supports alpha encoding)
When thinking about what the data might be, don’t throw away crazy ideas like “The data is S3TC /ATC /whatever but compressed again by some ‘normal’ compression algorithm”. Maybe they just replaced type 8 and 9 with an additional compression on top of these types.
Diamondback is searching for help from everyone who is experienced with file formats, image compression, OpenGL or reverse engineering. Since these efforts have been ongoing for several months, any input is appreciated. Those who wish to join the project should head over to the development thread and lend a hand.

Despite how many consider HTC Sense 3.0 and 3.5 as being very bloated, there is at least one place where HTC hit a home run–the lock screen. The customizable Sense lock ring is, far and wide, one of the most popular and functional lock screens. Of course, for rooted users it only gets better, as they can actually modify the lock ring to make it look how they want.
XDA Senior Member mohit1234 has written up a tutorial on how to theme lock rings for HTC Sense 3.0 and 3.5 that outlines the correct file size and the exact steps to take if you happen to own Photoshop. Additionally, the guide author also takes requests for lock rings, and the collection is already pretty extensive. While there are other guide threads available to accomplish the same, this one is among the most detailed and universal out there.
Despite being written for the HTC Amaze 4G, most of the steps can be used with other Sense 3.0 and 3.5 devices, as long as users take note of the appropriate PNG size for their display resolution, and modify the way it gets packaged. There are a few drawbacks, however. Mohit1234 does’t quite explain how to package the lock rings into a flashable update.zip, although we have covered update.zip creators in the past. Furthermore, users have to modify the individual APK of any Sense 3.0 or 3.5 skin they’re using to apply their lock ring.
For additional information, screen shots of the many lock rings already created, and additional tips and tricks, visit the modification thread.

XDA member AidenM shows the first ever ROM for HTC Flyer loaded with the newest operating system from Android: Ice cream sandwich. The work is based on Sensation RCMix 3D Leak w/ Dexter_nlb’s fixes for hardware and since it´s a beta version some bugs are present.
So far the Developer has a green light on:
- Wifi
- Market access
- AOSP lockscreen
- Rotation
- Touch
- ADB access
- External SD
It’s not perfect, here’s what’s not working:
- Camera
- Bluetooth
- Some settings panes (keyboard selecter)
- Rotation is blurry and pixelated
- HTC Apps not correctly sized for display
- Cannot take notes using the Pen
In order to install this ROM, you need to be Honeycomb S-OFF, after that just place the ROM on the root of your SD card and good to go. Remember always to do a nandroid backup and to wipe data and Dalvik just to be on the safe side. Here you can see a video of how it looks.
Much work need to be done before we have a fully daily operational ROM but it´s a good start, so if you are using it please report back to developer with your feed back so future versions can improve.
Thanks for reading.

Then simply place the file on your external sd card (the one you can take out) and flash it. Reboot, it will take some time but it will.
Stuff you may or may not care about (read anyways)
When selecting a book in the Reader app it is not sized correctly but the book itself takes up the whole screen so it is usable
Root can be buggy, sometimes it denies permissions
Over 500 MB Free RAMHW Keys are in testing but right now they crash the system.

Good news for all of us loyal HTC fans. It seems that after the huge success of the first Sensation, an even bigger brother in white boasting a huge 4.7 inch screen on a 480×800 Super LCD. This behemoth has been unveiled today under the name of Sensation XL and with good reason. It was being shown in London HTC´s event and we can see it´s official specifications being as follows:
- Sense 3.5
– 1.5GHz single-core Snapdragon -wonder why this instead a dual core…-
– 8MP rear shooter, 1.3 ffc
– 9.9mm slim
– 16GB of internal storage
– Beats Audio
The strange thing is that it has no SD Card slot and will be available in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia Pacific in early November. There is currently no ETA regarding a version for the Americas, but we are hoping it will come some time in 2012…
Are you drooling about the thought of this one with your name on it? Let us know what you think by leaving a comment.

It certainly didn’t take long. If you recall yesterday, we published an article about a port of the HTC Pico’s Rom to the Hero CDMA. This port came loaded with a lighter qvga version of the brand new Sense 3.5, which is also referred to as Sense Zero. We said that we were probably going to see ports of this on all other devices that were left for dead when it came to updates. Well, a little over 24 hours later and we found threads started by XDA members Hintay and TeamSuicide who ported the whole thing to the Sapphire, the Eris, and the Hero GSM. They all share similar hardware and it was simply a matter of time before it all came to be.
Each Rom has its own set of bugs but they are really all regular bugs of fresh Sense ports (WiFi issues, usb connectivity, etc), so keep in mind that they are not perfect yet. However, if you would like to help by leaving feedback, it would certainly be appreciated.
This is a port from the Nordic test of the 2.3.5 Sense 3.5 ROM from the HTC Explorer(Pico).
You can find more information in the original threads for the Eris, the HeroGSM, and the Sapphire.

Well, things seem to be coming down nicely for Sense 3.5, which we have already seen in a myriad of devices such as the HD2, the EVO 4G, Desire Z, Desire HD, and a few others. Well, it seems that XDA member flashinglights came across the dump of a new upcoming device called the HTC Pico, which as its name suggests, is a minimally designed Android device with low budget in mind. The interesting thing about the Pico is the fact that it is loaded with Sense 3.5, which happens to be called Sense Zero for this particular device. Due to having similar specs such as QVGA resolution and ARMv6 processor, a port for the CDMA Hero was successfully achieved (rather found in a Chinese forum). So, along with a few other devs at the Hero section, they decided to rebuild this rom from scratch and have released it for the masses. Long story short, if you still have and use your HTC Hero, you should definitely check this one out.
Needless to say, this port is still in initial stages and because of this, you may find some bugs. However, judging from the comments and reviews, it seems to be rather functional. Who knows? Maybe this port will open the doors for all other old devices and device owners who were dying to get their hands on some Sense 3.5 action. Please take it for a spin and leave your feedback when you do.
Team Heroc is composed of dastin1015 and flashinglights. We will be working alongside TeamSuicide whose members are tazzpatriot, condemndsoul, and macrodroid to give you guys the best sense 3.5 experience.
Explorer Sense is based of the leaked RUU of the HTC Pico, thanks to our chinese friend idogx whos build for the chinese version of the hero cdma helped a lot getting this thing off the ground.

HTC HD2 is still being the device with most operating systems running on it. Even with all the dual core processor devices popping up, the Leo is still a strong contender. This time, XDA member boxmax shows a freshly created ROM based on a Runnymede Build booting on HD2 -SD Version- with modding MixTheme by XDA member MccMjoon76.
Even more, the themes that come along on the original thread are well suited for giving this great UI its final touches.
This build is based on HTC Bliss WWE 1.10.401.0 and has some bugs around but with your feedback, future versions will be improved.

Looks like a good month to have an EVO 4G. Yesterday, we posted an article regarding a port of the latest Sense 3.5 rom to the Desire HD and the Desire S, which came from the unreleased HTC Runnymede. After having worked on the original build from XDA Recognized Developer capychimp, XDA Recognized Developer eVoKINGS has successfully ported this new build to the HTC EVO 4G. This build is by far a final one, but so far it seems that it comes loaded with a “real” version of Sense 3.5 and it also comes loaded with Android 2.3.5 as a rom base. Much like it was the case for the Bliss port that we spoke about last week, the current project (as it is less than 24 hours old), still has a lot of broken options such as wifi, inability to mount the SD card, broken wallpaper previews, no cameras, and last but not least rather low storage space right after flashing (some people have reported about 40 MB left without installing a single app). On top of that, if you were looking forward to the Quick Launcher widget from the Bliss build, it seems that you will not be getting that either or at least not until someone brings it into this build (currently being worked on).
If you don’t mind the aforementioned bugs and would like to test this, please help out the EVO community and leave good feedback on bugs, so that the devs working on this will have a better shot at making this fully usable.
This rom is based on Runnymede WWE ruu
0.82.401.1 android 2.3.5
