Milestone XT720 Welcomes CM9

March 13, 2012   By:

The ICS frenzy is beginning to find more and more devices each day. Many of these actually branch out from the ever popular AOSP ROMs, and more specifically, CyanogenMod 9. While there are no official CM9 releases for various devices, there are devs out there who will put out unofficial CM-derived kangs for devices that may not have made “the cut” for official inclusion by the CM team. The Motorola XT720 Milestone is one such device. With ICS ports hitting other devices left and right throughout the site,  XDA Forum Member mchlbenner decided to try and give the frozen treat to the owners of this device.

So far, the port is actually in a alpha/early beta stage as it has some basic functionality, but not enough to make it a daily driver. For instance, the device has functioning sensors, can make and receive calls as well as SMS, and it has a working GPS. The usual bugs are present such as the lack of a camera and tethering seems to be broken as well. The opening post actually has quite a few downloads, so make sure that you get the necessary packages are there are a few fixes for problems that are not yet rolled into the rom, but will eventually get there.

If you happen to try it, please leave some detailed feedback regarding performance and bugs, so that the dev can take a look and correct any and all mistakes on this port.

PLEASE READ ALLDIRECTIONS BEFORE FLASHING FOLLOW ALL DIRECTIONS OR IT WILL NOT WORK RIGHT. included .Sensors are working

So, you come from a different device into the world of the Milestone XT720 and you find out that you cannot annoy your friends with the flashlight app that you are so used to using for this. As it turns out, because the type of flash in the XT720 is a Xenon lamp flash, the lamp itself works differently than other regular LED flash lamps found in other devices. Luckily, XDA member easye420 has come up with a solution for this short coming. LightXT, as its name suggests, is a flashlight application that will work with the XT720′s Xenon lamp to give you flashlight capabilities. Very few, if any, apps out there will allow you to do this with this device (or any other device equipped with such technology). So, now you can go back to that dark stairwell with the confidence that you will not trip on some unseen cable.

Please leave some feedback for the dev as this app is in beta stage and he is currently looking for bugs.

Alright guys here it is. LightXT its pretty self explanatory. This does require you to be rooted. This is V.1 so there might be bugs but I haven’t found any so you should be fine. This has only been tested on US XT720 running Khalpowers miui themed V3 but technically it should work on all models of this phone with the auto focus led.

In their own site, Motorola made the statement that the XT720 would not be receiving an upgrade to Froyo and that it would remain as an Eclair-exclusive device. Little did they know that the good old people in the hacker community had been working hard to prove them wrong. Well, it seems that the fruits of the labor put on this project paid of greatly as XDA member Dexter_nlb posted a rom, and kernels to turn your XT720 into the delicious frozen treat also known as Froyo. Everything seems to be functional and the newer releases have many of the bugs ironed out. There are only a few bugs being reported for 1.2, which just proves how advanced this port currently is.

If you try this and encounter any problems, please make sure that you leave some feedback for the dev to look into.

so here is the new edition with uk kernel, basically pretty much the same as before with correct sensor drivers now.

A lot of people decided to ask for it, we were getting slammed with requests, so for all of you… here it is. The Motorola Milestone XT720 forums have surfaced on XDA for full fledged development. In case you are wondering why this device was so requested, while it is a mid range device for most specs, the 8 MP camera, which is capable of shooting 720p HD video would certainly more than make up for it. It also has a very modest price tag on it, so it is a very good entry to mid range Android device if you are just getting into this new world of Android and all of its delicious releases.

Do you already have one? Maybe you have created something interesting for it. Why don’t you share your thoughts with us and the rest of the community? We are eager to hear it.

You can visit the XT720 forum.
