froyo

While the Samsung Continuum is capable of some quite impressive feats that no other Android phone can do, one thing it cannot do is upgrade past Android 2.1 Eclair. Well, that was true until XDA forum member imnuts provided us with the leaked Android 2.2 Froyo build that Verizon and Samsung have yet to share with us.

Alleviating the pains of the seemingly forgotten stepchild in the Galaxy S family, the EC03 update improves upon the previous DL17 update substantially by ushering in the JIT compiler among other notable changes. Currently, there are no customized kernels to go with this release, but you can be sure it won’t be too long before something pops up on XDA.

Here is the update that everyone has been waiting for.  At the moment, I’m only providing the modem, and rooted, stock, deodexed version of the ROM. There will be a cleaned up version to go along with all of this in due time, but we’re currently working out some problems with it. I would like to note that despite this being the Froyo update, it is not without its own set of problems, and odds are you may never see another update outside of this from anywhere. However, the benefits of getting Froyo will outweigh the problems with it for most people, so have at it.

You will need a few things to get this, first, the downloads list here will be needed (obviously). You’ll also need to have CWM setup and know how to use Odin. Heimdall will also work for those of you not on Windows, but I’m not providing any instructions for flashing using Heimdall. Also note that you will want to wipe data or perform a factory reset before booting into Froyo to avoid any problems. While you may get away with not doing it, you could end up with several problems, so my recommendation is to wipe data. Also, you can flash the ROM first, or flash the modem first, which ever you want to do. There isn’t really a required order for it, as long as you do both parts.

Samsung-Continuum1

Despite the endless ocean of desirable Android phones available for the choosing, at some point you may have heard something about the Samsung Continuum. Though closely related to the Fascinate, and the rest of the Galaxy S family for that matter, it has one distinguishing feature: its soft-keys are not dedicated keys at all. Rather, the keys are simply overlain icons atop the sole 4″ screen, dividing the main screen portion and the bottom ticker area.

You may be thinking that this could lead to all sorts of fun, involving skinned soft keys. Thanks to the work of XDA forum member trailblazer101, you are now able to do precisely this. In the words of the developer:

So, in case you didn’t know already, the Continuum’s soft keys are actually part of the one full screen… Which means we can change them with a little effort.Hit me with ideas with what you want to see within this thread.

Here are the zips so far. You need CWM.
So far:

  • Original (duh :P)
  • Dark Green
  • Light Green
  • Light Blue
  • Purple
  • Dots!
  • Text!

Are you dying to customize the look of your Continuum’s soft-keys? If so, be sure to continue on to the original thread!

reboot continuum

There are several roms out there that will allow most Android devices to perform a wide variety of actions upon pressing and holding the power button. Thanks to XDA member imnuts, the Samsung Continuum may be joining that family of devices capable of doing this useful trick. Once it pulls up, the app will give you several options to chosse from (airplane mode, silent, reboot, and much more). Please be advised that the dev does not have the device but based on information from other Galaxy devices, the Continuum should work without an issue by applying this flashable package. So, apply this at your own risk.

If this mod worked for you or if you are having issues with it, please leave some feedback to ensure that this can be fixed in case it doesn’t work properly. The dev has attached the stock power off options in case you want to go back.

I don’t have a Continuum, so this is untested, but it hopefully works  It will give you the option to restart your phone, reboot into recovery, or reboot to download mode. This requires a deodexed system and CWM recovery, and the ROM from Adrynalyne would probably be a good start since that’s where I pulled the files from.

Verizon-Samsung-Continuum

For those of you on Verizon’s Samsung Continuum, you now have XDA member adrynalyne to thank for his work on the Clockwork Mod addition to the Samsung Continuum’s development section. He just released Clockwork Mod along with a basic DL17 ROM for the Continuum. There is a note for DL17 from the OP:

This is a very basic DL17 rom. It has been debloated, debinged, rooted, deodexed, and zipaligned. Does NOT include radio or kernel.

We encourage you to go check out these new additions if you have a Verizon Samsung Contiuum and to leave feedback for the developers in their threads (DL17) and (Clockwork Mod).

Seems that we will keep doing this until manufacturer’s stop releasing devices every other week. In any case, we have (due to popular request) added 2 new forums to our ever growing site. The first one is for another variant of the Galaxy Series of devices. This time, it is the turn of the Samsung Continuum, which is a mid-high range device equipped with a 1 GHz processor and a few other goodies that puts it right in between the ranks of its older brother, the Fascinate. The second device is one that has been requested for a while due to its price and relatively good specs for a tablet. Archos decided sometime last year that it was time for them to get into the Tablet business, as they are taking on their success as a mobile electronics manufacturer. The Gen8 is a family of tablet devices equipped with Android, lightweight, and as previously stated with a much lighter price tag than most of its competitors.

Development is already under way for both of these devices, so don’t be late to the party if you already have them! Join us and let us know your thoughts or if you have something to offer to the community, we are always happy to receive contributions.

You can visit the Gen8 fora here and the Continuum fora here.
