Game Changers – HTC Home

September 19, 2011   By:

htc-home-plugin

The recent XDA TV article by Azrienoch & cajunflavouredbob reminded me of the old days, when the HTC logo looked like this. Because of this, I was reminded of some of the old things released that really changed how we use and view our devices and also changed what we came to expect from the device manufacturers.

The first game changer I want to look at is HTC Home. This was the first incarnation of what would eventually come to be HTC Sense. It ran on windows mobile as a plug-in for the home screen and instead of displaying widgets that can be freely moved around to suit the users needs, it displayed one of 5 or 6 things on half the screen.

The first was the “home” tab, this displayed a large digital style clock, below this was sms, emails and missed calls notifications, This was way before the flip clock style animation we know and love today was dreamed of.

The next tab was the “people” tab allowing you to have 10 contacts available via shortcuts.

Next was “weather” displaying a non animated logo from a limited range of places. If I remember correctly, it was tied into the Accuweather service and you could eventually add cities by using the accuweather city codes.

Following this was a “program” tab allowing ten application shortcuts. Funny how that seemed enough back then. These also allowed easy access to settings like connectivity as well. Then, there was a page entirely devoted to sound (and no not music, I’m taking about volume levels and ringtone levels).

At the time, this was THE thing to have, just like modern sense is now. This was because it showed the things you needed to see in one place, and it did it in a more aesthetic way than the existing plug-ins did. But I find it interesting to see how a simple today screen plugin has evolved to become a integral part of the Android operating system on HTC phones.

Do you still have good old Windows Mobile in your device? Then you must know about the GTX UI. XDA member devil-strike presents a skin for your PocketMusic with all the black and white style of GTX. Working on WM 6.5 and if you have WM6.5.x, there is a fix so you can use it as well. Installation is quite easy and landscape support is included.
Please leave your feedback for the developer, so future versions can improve.

Do you still use Windows Mobile as your main platform? Then, it´s time for a new look on your device and all you need to have is Throttle Launcher. XDA member Trekfan422991 presents Lacuna, an interesting minimal style theme that will change the look of your home screen. At the moment, it´s only available for WVGA and WQVGA resolutions but the developer mentions that future versions will include QVGA and VGA as well. You can also find two animated boot screens to match your new theme.
Please share your thoughts on the original thread.

touch tools

There are several tweaks and mods for the powerhouse also known as the HTC HD2. However, one of the most popular ones (aside from CHT) is Touch Tools, which just happened to receive a much deserved update. XDA member lyriquidperfection has just released a new set of tools that will allow the user to apply, in a rather simple manner, many tweaks and mods to the Windows Mobile platform, most of which are only accessible via registry. Some of the tools included are Pinch to Zoom Manager, Boot Manager, System Viewer, HotKey Utility, and several others. each one of these will allow you to fully customize any part of the OS that you feel is lacking some of your personal touches, all that without having to touch the registry yourself!

Please try it out and let the dev know if you find any bugs.

Touch Tools for HTC 2.0 Suite is a powerful set of applications that lets you modify different settings on your device that would not otherwise be available to you.

There are currently 9 applications that make up the full Touch Tools 2.0 Suite

F1 2011

Having up to date information at your fingertips is one of the main driving forces behind having devices like the one we normally carry. As such, RSS feeds, social networking, e-mail, and other activities have taken deep roots in the way we interact with our devices as all these provide the information that we need, when we need it. The same concept holds true for sports fans across the globe. Whether it is soccer, rugby, or any sports that has a league in any given country, we normally want to stay up to date with our favorite players and teams. XDA member chinubrio has released F1 2011 for Windows Mobile. The app will allow you to track the progress of all the drivers, their lap times, will provide you with biographical information, and much more.  So, if you are a Formula 1 fan and needed a reason to pick up your Windows Mobile

Please leave some feedback for the dev to improve this further.

We love our hobbies, whether it be sports, electronics, or both. What better way to show the combined loved than by merging one into the other? XDA member lnando84 shares his creations for all NFL fans out there. The dialer skins feature your favorite NFL team logo in the background as well as re-designed number buttons to match the style. These are only good for WVGA devices like the HD2 and Touch pro 2, running Windows Mobile 6.5 and up. Please do not try to install them in devices with lower resolutions as they will mess up your device, likely forcing you to reflash your current rom or performing a hard reset. He has also included some extra dialpads for those of you who live with the Christmas spirit, as well as a few miscellaneous ones for those with a need to simply change the look into something less fan-ish.

Please leave some feedback and maybe some requests if you have any.

I want to start off by saying I’m a HUGE Philadelphia Eagles Football Fan!! I have a thread in the TP2 themes and apps section for NFL dialpads skins I’ve made for all 32 teams over the past few months. I’ve been asked/told I should start a thread here for all my dialpad skins because they also work on the HD2. I’ll be adding preview’s as well as download links to them below. Let me know if anyone runs into any problems when running these. I’ll also try taking on a few requests so let me know what you guys are thinking..

You can find more information in the skins thread.

Do you remember the menu used on the first Toshiba TG01 devices with Windows Mobile?, well now XDA member mirolg has ported it to work on more devices. ToshibaStripesMenu works on WM 6.1 and later and to install it, simply disable all items in the home screen, then install it, and it’s ready to use. Some members have reported some bugs on their devices and the developer is working on an updated version correcting the issues. No doubt, this is a nice home screen to have in mind.
If you like it, please let us know if it´s working or not. Your feedback is very important.

poytest2

How about a Windows Mobile article for a change? XDA member poyensa posted a great tutorial explaining how to create or edit any Cookie Home Tab 2.0 widget. Basically, the original poster compiled the how to´s including quotes from developers but on a simpler way to understand the whole process of editing/creating widgets. The guide also includes an extensive, and very well documented, way to solve most common problems. You will find a section where you can create your own widget as well.
The developer invested a considerable amount of time on this compilation and surely your feedback will be well received. Olé!

Are you interested in making or editing a CHT widget? To make a widget for Co0kie Home Tab 2.0.0 is not such a difficult job as you may think, I tell you by experience. I have no previous formation in programs or informatic code but i could make a few widgets(*) and I would like to share this experience with you. This is not so altruistic work, I am expecting a huge amount of widgets made by all of you to install and enjoy in my brand-repaired HD2

Co0kie Master has allready published a guide for making a CHT widget (it is into the widgets kitchen); also Genius_Rat_2665 has made a tutorial for making a cht clock widget, so -the third time lucky- lets bring here all that knowledge and try to make a simple widget step-by-step. Also this could be a good place to share and learn each other some code for widgets. Things like how to make an blinking element, how to change number in text, how to read from the registry, etc.

(*) What is for sure is that no one widget I could ever do without the help of others. Lets start quoting the existing Co0kie’s guide

Still using the wonderful Windows Mobile? Then, you may remember ActionScreen. XDA member Skrobel was tired of the lack of support for landscape, so he decided to develop a 12-icon ActionScreen that supported that orientation. The latest version has a fixed SW_MINIMIZE, so that the app minimizes instead of going to the background. Moreover, it now supports non-Sense interfaces (Today Screen and Titanium tested). Working on WVGA resolutions only.
Please leave feedback for the developer.

[APP][13.02.2011]ActionScreen w. Landscape support v0.3 WVGA[Developers please help]

Hello

I liked the idea of an ActionScreen ever since I met with this program for a first time (it was on a Sense 2.1 stock ROM so it was really handy).

But as I am a Rhodium owner, I always had problem with Landscape orientation. The Smaberg’s ActionScreen was showing only 2 rows of icons in Landscape or wasn’t showing at all. So with the encouragement by Jackos I started to develop my own application based very much on the original idea of the 12-icon ActionScreen from Smaberg. As I am definitely not a programmer I started to learn Basic4PPC for a starter. Then, after I discovered how many environment restrictions it gives I switched to C#.

What I present here is a preliminary version which has full Landscape support (the app will run without problems in Landscape and will change it’s layout properly even if there will be an orientation change while program is shown).

* NEW * – The whole app has been rewritten from scratch. Also changed to the C# + NetCF as I thought it will solve most of my memory problems…

Probably one of the most colorful original themes for your Windows mobile. This theme, known as Purity by XDA member Lunie is a good option if you are one of the WM lovers around and use s2u2. Working only for Cookie Home Tab 2.0 with Windows Mobile 6.5 and up for WVGA resolutions and sense build 2016 and superior. No doubt a good option to have in mind if you are looking for an original high quality theme.

My theme for windows mobile releasing it on DeviantArt.

The theme is based on a bunch of things i’ve seen on the internet. It’s basically a cleaner, more vibrant version of sense. Though it’s colors are very limiting I was somehow able to manage it to stay high quality w/o reducing it’s form.

Enjoy the preview releasing it today for Sense. =)
