The Weekly Q&A: Week 5

Every week, we select five questions and answers, found on the forums. Even though some of these questions and answers might not be of help to you, they might still be interesting to read.

Q‘I need to enter my MAC address in my router and can’t find it on my TD2. If you know how to find it, any help would be appreciated.

A Turn on Wi-Fi, then go to Settings\Connections\Wi-Fi\Advanced\ (or Comm Manager\Wi-Fi\Advanced\) and switch to the Advanced tab.

  • Q&A originally posted in the Touch Diamond 2 (Topaz) General forum thread.

Q‘When can I expect to see a Froyo-based ROM with HTC Sense on my Hero?’

A Nobody is currently working on a Sense Froyo ROM for the Hero. If or when a suitable device gets the Froyo update (such as the MyTouch 3G Slide or the Legend) a port will be attempted. The device needs to be based on the same ARM architecture as the Hero. No Froyo device yet uses this.

  • Q&A originally posted in the Hero General forum thread.

Q‘On the Dash, when typing, a long press will input the Alt+key combination, e.g. When you perform a long press on the “W” key it will input “1”. The Snap can’t do it and I need to press the FN key. Is there any way to change this?’

A Yes! It involves changing the device’s key map with a text editor. See this post for more details.

  • Q&A originally posted in the Dash 3G General forum thread.

Q‘After installing the Swype keyboard on my HD2, nothing happens when I try to enter my four-digit passcode. Please help!’

A It is a known problem with Swype that it changes user information once installed. As the passcode is hashed with such information it makes it almost impossible to unlock your device again if Swype is installed incorrectly, so a hard reset is the only viable option. Check out this thread to find out how to avoid such problems in the future.

  • Q&A originally posted in the HD2 General forum thread.

Q‘I recently bought an HD Mini and, although I love the phone, I can’t get the screen to rotate when I bring up a menu (despite doing so in messaging and photo album applications). I’d like it to rotate so that I have more room to press buttons. Is there any fix for this?’

A Why not try the handy changeScreen app by 600GOL?

  • Q&A originally posted in the HD Mini Themes and Apps forum thread.

We certainly hope that you can use these bits of knowledge. This site is full of wonderful guides for virtually every question you could have. Read them and put them to good use.

ben_duder is an editor on XDA-Developers, the largest community for Android users. Hi! My name's Ben, and I'm proud to be one of the news writers at xda-developers. I live near London and have spent the last ten years wasting all the money I get my hands on on new gadgets with which to fulfil my technolust. I first got into HTC phones when I found a Lobster 700TV (the HTC Monet) at a very good price, and I'm ashamed to say that I couldn't have cared less about what operating system the phone was running as long as I could watch The Simpsons on the bus. As fellow Monet owners might know, the 'TV' part of the phone's alternate title was somewhat deceiving and was completely abandoned by the service providers in England. However, by then I had already fallen in love with the freedom Windows Mobile had given me. After the Monet came a Universal, with a Touch Pro following that. I've just bought a G1 (yeah, I know, get with the times!) because I'm really interested in Android as a budding operating system and don't think I could ever cope with a 'dumbphone' now that I know what's on offer. Although I haven't contributed much to the site in terms of programming or cooking help, I hope that I can give a bit back by letting you guys know what's new through my articles. If you have any questions, suggestions or complaints about those articles, feel free to get in touch with me via PM using the URL above. View ben_duder's posts and articles here.

Open War for Open Android: Antitrust for Cyanogen?

Android and openness is something we talk about all the time, but the recent developments in the industry point towards inherent flaws with this very premise. Be it from bloggers, political institutions or corporations, Android is seemingly not open enough. The “War on Openness” is ironically becoming an open war, where many players are increasing their stakes and scope to try and land a bigger hold - or at the very least, restrict Google’s - on what is the world’s...

Diving into the April 2015 Material Design Update

Before the release of Android 5.0 Lollipop, the Holo Design guidelines served as the official reference for Android design, right from IceCream Sandwich to KitKat. However, updates to the guidelines were few and far between, leading to a lack of synchronization between Android design and current UI/UX trends. Google seems to have learned from their mistake the last time around, and earlier this week, a significant update was released for the Material Design guidelines, marking the second revision in less...
