Final Frontier – Check! DFT Releases HSPL for Second Generation HTC WP7 Devices

DFT (Dark Forces Team) has been around our site for quite some time—since the days of Windows Mobile. More often than not, whenever a post of theirs appears on our site, something awesome is about to happen to a device. For instance, back in February they were successfully able to grant HSPL unlock goodness to the first generation HTC WP7 devices such as the Mozart, Schubert, etc. After Microsoft released the Mango update (WP 7.5), lots of things changed—not only in the OS part but also in other areas of the devices. HTC spent a monumental amount of effort making sure that this time the exploits used to hack their devices were leak tight. They added things such as INTEROPLOCK, and they modified drivers to the point that the OS became completely leak tight, or so they thought.

XDA Elite Recognized Developer Cotulla and XDA Recognized Developer mwang have come through once again for the community (or at least the portion using WP7 devices) by bringing in HSPL for second generation devices such as the Titan and the Omega. Please note that this method does not work for the recently released Titan 2 due to it having a different SPL. In case you are not aware of any of this, the SPL is the Secondary Program Loader, which once bypassed allows you to flash roms onto the device. However, bypassing this is not a simple feat due to the fact that messing up the SPL can and will lead you to a full brick. Also, this change can easily be reverted by a software update. Hard SPL or HSPL is a custom SPL that overwrites the stock SPL on the device, thus allowing you to flash custom firmware, a.k.a. ROMs! The method is not for the faint of heart, and you will need a special Y-cable to flash the device’s HSPL.

Another warning from Cotulla was the fact that this method is only for certain CID numbers, meaning that depending where you got your device, the device could spit out a Country ID error if it is not part of the “list”. If this is your case, then you must use the ever popular Gold Card Method, to get things going. Last but not least, make sure that you do not update your devices to any kind of FW 4.x, as the SPL is newer and the devs are not aware of any method to flash it back. Please proceed with extreme caution as this can brick your device if you are not careful on what you do.

If and when you are done with the unlocking procedure, mwang has been nice enough to provide the first custom roms available for both the Titan and the Radar. Also, please leave some feedback for the devs to look at in case the procedure doesn’t work.

Do not update your device to 4.XX ROMs via RUU or Zune!
It’s not known if possible to revert that SPL versions back.

Supported WP7S devices

*Omega (HTC Radar C110e)
*Titan (HTC Eternity X310e)

HTC Radiant (Titan II) IS NOT SUPPORTED!
