Third Party Windows Phone Apps Now Have Full SkyDrive Access

Third Party Windows Phone Apps Now Have Full SkyDrive Access

One of the major points of contention that Android users tend to hold over the heads of all the other platforms is the glory of “The Cloud”. It’s not for nothing, Google’s plan to make your mobile experience almost completely reliant on the combination of an Internet connection and their services yields some pretty great results. I never have to worry about my photos, documents, contacts, or much of anything else for that matter. For users who aren’t rooted, the only thing not in the cloud is the data you save when in a third party app. If you are playing a game or using a service that requires you to manually upload to another backup of some kind, that information is likely lost if anything happens to your phone. With all of Google’s might in the cloud, it’s even more interesting to see that Microsoft was the first of the two companies to grant third party app developers access to their cloud service.

Microsoft has made adjustments to its SkyDrive REST API’s to allow third party developers to upload files of any type and share them just like you can in One Note or Office. Any user with a Windows Live ID has access to SkyDrive for free, and can access the data from Skydrive across a myriad of other platforms.  So far, the only third party app found to have already implemented the API’s is Handyscan, but we anticipate developers will flock to the new tools at their disposal. Personally, I think it will be interesting to see if game developers are willing to allow users to save game data to SkyDrive, much like is being done now with the Xbox 360 update last week. It’s an impressive step for Microsoft in clear competition with Google’s services and Apple’s iCloud, and it will be interesting to see how developers take advantage of the new API’s.
