Tutorial – Backup Windows Phone 7 Via ZUNE

XDA member hx4700 Killer wrote a .Net app which will backup and restore your Windows Phone via Zune. Using this application will make you have a full identical copy of your device when you are upgrading or modifying, so you can go back to a point to restore if you need to. The developer warns HTC HD2 owners to not use this app as Zune won´t connect with it, at least for now.
The latest version v1.2 has added archive capabilities and restore button. The original post includes a list of all the required elements and a full guide on how to proceed.
Please be sure to read and understand the whole process before starting and leave your comments.

I have written a .Net app for backing up windows phone 7 via the Zune updater tool. This backup can be used by Zune to restore the device when you use the “Update” option under settings.
READ THIS!!! This is a COMPLETE backup and COMPLETE restore. Your phone will be EXACTLY the same after a restore as it was when you did the backup. Any updates, file changes, registry entries, or texts will not persist that were not on the phone at the time of the backup. Sorry for the bold but I have answered this question about a dozen times in PM’s or on here.
HD2 owners: This has not been confirmed to work on your devices. In fact the opposite. The reason seems to be that the device does not use the same boot loader as other WP7 phones and does not show up as a WP7 device when booted to the loader thus ZUNE doesnt talk to it.
**New features, Archive capability of the older backups AND restore of active backup or archives.
Firstly I have to credit this to reading and putting together pieces from several threads on XDA. I read so many to be honest I am no longer sure who all to credit. There was no specific single source I just saw several things and through trial and error put together the pieces that made this possible.
This APP is a wrapper around a tool microsoft produced to perform updates to your phone via command line. Specifically the executeable “updatewp.exe” that comes from the Windows Phone Support Tools. The missing piece that eluded me for a bit was the update package itself which I found here on XDA and will link to later.
