The quality of the photographs we can take with our smartphones has steadily increased over the last decade. Sony and Samsung camera sensors are among the most used out there, but there's only so much you can do with the raw data from them. The real work is in the post-processing of this data and each company handles things differently. Not all smartphone OEMs can put as many resources into its camera application as others. Thankfully, we have talented developers within the community who work on porting the Google Camera app to other devices. Arnova's latest port improves the photos on the ASUS ZenFone 6, OnePlus 7, and OnePlus 7 Pro.

It's thanks to these developers that we are able to increase the quality of the photos we take on select smartphones. We generally see these ports for devices where the OEM chose to dedicate its limited resources in other areas. This can be anything from software features to simply reducing the price of the device. Xiaomi and OnePlus smartphones tend to get a lot of attention from these Google Camera port developers and XDA Senior Member Arnova is quite active with thousands of people using his port of the app.

We recently showed how early Google Camera ports improve the photo quality of the OnePlus 7 Pro and ASUS ZenFone 6. Arnova has improved things even further with their latest build of the port being released earlier today. This is version V2.2.190716.1800 of the port, and it's based on version 6.2.030 of the Google Camera application. It includes the following changes:

  • Add HDR+ Auto from pixel 3
  • Add Exposure Compensation
  • Add Custom HDR+ denoise
  • Add Color Capture Support
  • Fix Multi-Lens mode
  • Fix PatchLoader by @KoopahTManiac
  • Fix and stability for ZenFone6 and OP7/7Pro
  • And something else

OnePlus 7 Pro XDA Forums

So, whether you are using the ZenFone 6 or the OnePlus 7/7 Pro, you'll be happy to hear that image quality has improved since the last time we covered these Google Camera ports. Also, ASUS ZenFone 6 owners should know that 48MP shots and switching to the ultra-wide-angle lens both work without root. However, OnePlus 7 Pro owners are unable to take 48MP images yet. Not only that but switching to the telephoto and ultra-wide-angle lens also requires root access.
