ASUS ROG Phone II bootloader unlock tool and kernel source code are already available

The newly launched ASUS ROG Phone II is a ludicrous device, to say the least. As is with products falling within the “gaming” sub-ecosystem, Asus has gone overboard with just about everything on the device, giving us our most powerful Android smartphone ever. The ROG Phone II comes with the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus SoC, 12GB RAM, 512GB UFS 3.0 storage, a 120Hz FHD+ AMOLED display with a claimed 240Hz touch sampling rate and 49ms touch latency, a massive 6,000 mAh battery with 30W fast charging, pressure-sensitive Air Trigger buttons, dual front-facing stereo speakers, a 3.5mm headphone jack, 48MP Sony IMX586 primary sensor, and of course, RGB lighting on the logo. Asus also offers a choice between the gaming-inspired ROG UI and the stock Android-like ZenUI Classic on the phone, so you can comfortably use this overkill smartphone as your daily driver too. Now, Asus is going a step further and allowing bootloader unlocking on the device, alongside releasing the kernel sources for the ROG Phone II.

The bootloader on the ASUS ROG Phone II can be unlocked through the utility tool offered by Asus. Though, you do need to keep in mind that unlocking the bootloader on this phone voids the warranty of the device, and also disables OTA updates. Also, note that unlocking the bootloader forces a factory reset and that you need to run the tool apk from your device itself. You would need to unlock the bootloader to root your device.

Asus has also released the kernel sources for the device, which will come in handy for further third-party kernel, ROM and recovery development. There aren’t too many customization resources available just yet for the phone, but we do predict some to arrive when the phone gets a wider release across the globe.
