About João Carrasqueira

I've been covering the tech world for over 5 years, with a heavy focus on laptops and the Windows ecosystem. I also love all things tech and videogames, especially Nintendo, which I'm always happy to talk about.

What was your first computer?

It's been a long time, but I remember having an old Compaq desktop PC running Windows XP, which was the family computer in my house. It had a 20GB hard drive and, if my memory serves, 512MB of RAM, yet it allowed me to play some of the games I remember most fondly, such as Rollcage and Lego Racers.

How long have you been interested in technology?

I've been interested in tech for as long as I can remember, whether it's computers or phones. I'd always look for ways to enhance the performance of my computer or try new versions of Windows, and I joined the Windows Insider Program the day the first build was released.

What tech products or categories are you most passionate about?

I love all things tech, and Windows has always been my home, so both software and hardware are things that interest me deeply. I'm also a huge fan of console gaming, with a big focus on Nintendo, whose games have a level of charm that most other companies don't replicate, despite their lesser technical prowess.

We live in an age where most people have their own laptop, but it's still common for families to share a desktop computer that's used by everyone. Or, even if you have your own laptop, maybe you want to lend it to a friend but don't want them to access all your data. Thankfully, Windows 11 makes this easy by allowing you to create a dedicated account for other users so you don't have to worry about sharing your personal information.

If you've used a Windows PC for an extended period of time, there's a very good chance you've run into some issue with your internet connection. It's a very common situation, and the root cause can vary a lot. A potential culprit, however, is a corrupted or excessively long DNS cache.

How to clear the cache on Windows 11

If you have a lot of temporary files clogging up your system, clearing the cache on Windows 11 can help free up some space.

Over time, computers can accumulate a lot of files due to regular usage, and very often, you no longer need them. As these files pile up, they can take up a significant amount of space on your drive, and you may find that you can no longer save new files. A lot of these files are what you'd call a "cache," which are generally files that exist to speed up loading times in certain circumstances, though there are other types of temporary files your PC can create over time. If you need to free up some space on your Windows 11 PC, clearing this cache and other temporary files is a good start. Thankfully, it's a fairly straightforward process, and there are two main ways to do it.

OWC Thunderbolt Go Dock review: Why aren't all docks like this?

The OWC Thunderbolt Go Dock is a very rare docking station with a built-in power supply, and that alone makes it one of the best I've ever tried.

I've reviewed plenty of docks in my time, and plenty of great ones at that. But the OWC Thunderbolt Go is the first one I reviewed from the company, and it's a very special one at that. I'd argue it's my favorite docking station ever, despite some limitations.

5 ways PC gaming handhelds still can't compete with the Switch

PC gaming handhelds have boomed in popularity since the Steam Deck, but it won't be enough to make them outshine the Nintendo Switch.

By

Handheld gaming PCs aren't exactly new, but it's very fair to say that the success of the Nintendo Switch kickstarted a wave of devices that tried to capitalize on the popularity of this form factor. That truly became obvious when Valve joined the party with the excellent Steam Deck, which prompted even more competition from Windows OEMs, including Asus and Lenovo making their debut in this market.

How to use BitLocker on Windows 11

Windows 11 has a feature called BitLocker, which encrypts your data to keep it safe from others. Here's how to set it up.

Keeping your data safe is extremely important, and Windows 11, much like previous versions, comes with a technology called BitLocker. It encrypts the data on your drive, preventing third-party actors from accessing it unless they have the decryption key. You wouldn't notice it's enabled most of the time since you're always logged into your account and everything just works by verifying your identity this way, but it prevents others from accessing your files if they don't know your password.

How to open and extract RAR files on your PC

Having trouble opening that RAR file someone sent you? Here's how you can open RAR files on your Windows PC using WinRAR.

At some point, everybody receives a file they're not sure how to open. Windows doesn't natively support all file formats, so sometimes you need special software. The RAR format is a very common example. RAR was developed in 1993 by Eugene Roshal for compressed archives, similar to ZIP files you can create with Windows. It can contain numerous other files, much like a folder, but those files are compressed to take up less space on a disk, making it easier to share those files.

Even though Microsoft Edge is powered by the same engine as Google Chrome, and offers plenty of cool features like access to Bing Chat, and even money-saving shopping features, it's also a critical part of Windows itself, powering some components like Widgets, and even Copilot.

The world of OLED gaming monitors is getting bigger than ever, and in the case of the LG UltraGear 45GR95QE, that's quite literal. This 45-inch ultrawide monitor offers one of the most immersive experiences you can get, and with its OLED panel and a 240Hz refresh rate, you can't do much better than this for gaming.

Microsoft's PowerToys suite includes a ton of tools that can help boost your productivity or get complex tasks done. There are plenty of tools for all kinds of users, and among them is Color Picker, a relatively simple, but potentially super useful tool that lets you grab any color from your screen to use in another app. It's not always easy to grab a color to use in different places, but Color Picker offers a robust solution to this problem so you never have trouble using the color you want again.

The Windows 11 Moment 5 update isn't the most exciting, but it's very welcome

Windows 11 will receive the Moment 5 update later this month, and while there aren't a ton of changes, it includes one of the best updates yet.

By

Windows 11 is set to receive yet another feature update — what's often called the Moment 5 update — this month. Comparing the sheer number of changes, this is one of the smaller updates Microsoft has released so far in terms of new features. However, while Windows 11 Moment 5 may not appear that exciting on paper, there are some great changes on board, and one in particular makes me very excited about this update.

Microsoft and Qualcomm first introduced Windows on Arm back in 2017, but it took some time for Arm devices to catch on. The ability to run Windows on Arm-based processors is a big deal. Arm processors offer always-on connectivity, instant wake, and many of them come with cellular connectivity without adding a premium to the price. The first few Windows on Arm devices all had the same processors, which weren't very good.

The Switch has sold 140 million units, and it's an even bigger deal than you think

Nintendo's hybrid console is the third best-selling console of all time by units. But its success is even more notable than you might think.

In its earnings results for the third quarter of its financial year 2024, Nintendo recently revealed that the Nintendo Switch has sold nearly 140 million units since its launch almost seven years ago. The exact number is 139.36 million, which puts the Switch firmly as the third-best-selling console of all time, trailing only the PlayStation 2 (with a recorded 155 million) and Nintendo DS (at 154 million). Software sales for the Switch are impressive, too. 1,200 million Nintendo Switch games have been sold, the most of any Nintendo platform ever.

Microsoft is missing an opportunity by not releasing Windows 12 this year

The next big Windows update isn't called Windows 12, but Microsoft would benefit if it was. Here's why.

By

Soon after the release of Windows 11, reports started floating around that Microsoft intended to go back to a three-year cycle for its major operating system releases. This led many, including myself, to the belief that the true follow-up to Windows 11 would be Windows 12 at some point this year.
