About Rich Woods

Hello! I'm the Editor-in-Chief of XDA, and I've been reporting on all things consumer tech since 2013. More recently, I've had more of a focus on Windows, and I've reviewed pretty much every mainstream laptop under the sun. If you see me somewhere, come say hello and let me ask you awkward questions about why you use the tech that you use.

What was your first computer?

I'm not sure of the brand, but back in 1987, my family had a PC with an Intel 8088 processor, 512KB RAM, and 20MB storage. It's fun to think about how I now have photos that wouldn't have fit on that entire hard drive. It ran DOS, and I used it to play games like The Oregon Trail and Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego.

How long have you been interested in technology?

A few years after I got that first PC, I liberated my father's book on GW-BASIC. That was my start with wanting to learn more about how computers worked. By the time I was in high school, I was writing Visual Basic programs to figure out the passwords on school computers. Weirdly, I never actually got into trouble for that.

What tech products or categories are you most passionate about?

Windows! It's the software that I've been using since I was a child and I've always admired the broad range of hardware that uses it. This interest is what led to that passion to understand why people choose the tech that they do, and to help people to make those decisions by reviewing the products that they might end up buying.

Today, Microsoft is releasing Windows 11 build 22000.65 to the Dev channel, its second ever public beta build of the new OS. Being that it's the second preview of a major new operating system, you might be expecting big new features, but you'd be mistaken. The list of new features is pretty minor, but they do solve some pain points.

Intel is discontinuing the Lakefield chips that were supposed to go in the Surface Neo

Intel has started its process of discontinuing its Lakefield processors, which were once headed for Microsoft's Surface Neo.

Two years ago, Intel's Lakefield processors were something of a big deal. They were Intel's first attempt at replicating the big.LITTLE architecture that we see on ARM chips. Of course, Intel isn't one to admit that it makes little anything, so Intel's Hybrid Technology was called big-bigger. Now, Intel Lakefield is being discontinued, or at least beginning Intel's long process of being discontinued.

But the one Windows 11 change that's caught a lot of backlash is the new system requirements.

Lenovo Legion 5 Pro Review: Ryzen 5000 and RTX 30 performance, and a 16:10 screen

Lenovo's new Legion 5 Pro not only has AMD's Ryzen 5000 processors and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 graphics, but it has a 16:10 display.

One of the big stories around Lenovo's Legion 5 Pro is that it now comes with a 16-inch 16:10 QHD display. Considering the amount of power that's under the hood here, there's a lot going on with what's technically Lenovo's mainstream gaming laptop, or a Pro version of it. I can tell you that with AMD Ryzen 5000 processors and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 graphics, this thing is powerful. The new graphics card powers the 165Hz screen nicely, and it all makes for an impressive gaming experience.
