About Rich Woods

Hello! I'm the Editor-in-Chief of XDA, and I've been reporting on all things consumer tech since 2013. More recently, I've had more of a focus on Windows, and I've reviewed pretty much every mainstream laptop under the sun. If you see me somewhere, come say hello and let me ask you awkward questions about why you use the tech that you use.

What was your first computer?

I'm not sure of the brand, but back in 1987, my family had a PC with an Intel 8088 processor, 512KB RAM, and 20MB storage. It's fun to think about how I now have photos that wouldn't have fit on that entire hard drive. It ran DOS, and I used it to play games like The Oregon Trail and Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego.

How long have you been interested in technology?

A few years after I got that first PC, I liberated my father's book on GW-BASIC. That was my start with wanting to learn more about how computers worked. By the time I was in high school, I was writing Visual Basic programs to figure out the passwords on school computers. Weirdly, I never actually got into trouble for that.

What tech products or categories are you most passionate about?

Windows! It's the software that I've been using since I was a child and I've always admired the broad range of hardware that uses it. This interest is what led to that passion to understand why people choose the tech that they do, and to help people to make those decisions by reviewing the products that they might end up buying.

On October 26, 2012, Microsoft released the Surface RT, the first computer that the company every produced. That was 10 years ago today, and a lot has changed. I hadn't even written a blog post yet, but the things Microsoft was doing in the hardware space was exciting me.

Surface Laptop 5 review: More power, but that's about it

Microsoft's Surface Laptop 5 doesn't get some of the perks of the rest of the Surface lineup, but it has more power at the same price point.

The Surface Laptop 5 isn't much of a change over the Surface Laptop 4, which is both a good thing and a bad thing. The good news is that it keeps the price down when laptop prices are skyrocketing. (Seriously, I keep looking up prices of products I'm reviewing and shocking myself with how much they cost.)

Surface Studio 2 Plus: Release date, price, and everything else

The Surface Studio 2 Plus is a premium all-in-one desktop PC with powerful specs and a very high price tag. Here's what you should know.

It's been four years since Microsoft launched the Surface Studio 2, and it was the last we saw of the Studio line until the Surface Laptop Studio showed up in 2021. But now, Microsoft is bringing its desktop all-in-one back from the dead with the Surface Studio 2+ (Plus). Prior to launch, we'd been expecting this to be called the Surface Studio 3, but it seems like Microsoft may not consider this a big enough upgrade to justify jumping one number up.

Dell XPS 13 (2022) review: A beautiful, underpowered redesign

Dell's new XPS 13 (2022) is a complete redesign from its predecessors, now coming in colors like Sky and Umber, and it's a pleasure to use.

Without a doubt, Dell's XPS laptops are some of the best laptops around. Indeed, year in and year out, I'm excited when one arrives at my door, and every time, I get to say that it's one of the best laptops on the market. The Dell XPS 13 9315 (the 2022 model) is no different, although things are a bit different this year.

Lenovo ThinkPad Z16 review: Big Ryzen energy

The Lenovo ThinkPad Z16 is a laptop that's designed in collaboration with AMD for Ryzen processors, and it's a modern take on a ThinkPad.

Announced way back at CES this year, Lenovo's ThinkPad Z-series is a modern take on a ThinkPad, a brand that's known for hanging onto legacy components and, frankly, being a little stale. The Lenovo ThinkPad Z16 is larger than the ThinkPad Z13, and now that I've reviewed them both, I actually think the former is the better product.

Google is still the one holding back native browsers for Windows on Arm

We all know Google Chrome doesn't run natively on Windows on Arm, but it's another Google product that keeps other browsers from running.

If you've been following along for the past decade or so, then you know that the story between Microsoft and Google is the same. Whether it's Windows RT, Windows Phone, or Windows 11 on Arm, we never see native Google apps. Of course, the former two of those three platforms are long dead, but Windows on Arm is alive and well, and there's no native Arm64 Google Chrome browser for it.

Microsoft's Surface Pro 9 is official (along with the Surface Laptop 5 and Surface Studio 2 Plus), coming in a couple of new colors and offering a 5G option. There are Intel and Arm options now, packing 12th-gen U-series chips on the Intel side and the new Microsoft SQ3 on the Qualcomm side.

Microsoft adds 12th-gen processors in the Surface Laptop 5, and not much else

Microsoft is holding its annual October hardware event today, and alongside the Surface Pro 9 and Surface Studio 2+, it launched the Surface Laptop 5. While last year's Surface Pro 8 got a big redesign and it arrived alongside the innovative Surface Laptop Studio, which was a redesigned Surface Book, many expected to see a lot from the Surface Laptop 5.

Microsoft merges Surface Pro X and Surface Pro 9 brands, adds pretty new colors

Microsoft has announced its Surface Pro 9 tablet. It comes in two new colors, has Intel's 12th-gen processors, and more.

While Microsoft holds a hardware event every October, the only real staple of that event is a new Surface Pro. Every other product is on a less-than-annual update cadence. So alongside the Surface Laptop 5 and Surface Studio 2 Plus, the company introduced the Surface Pro 9. It actually comes in two models, the Surface Pro 9 and the Surface Pro 9 with 5G, which are pretty different from each other.

Microsoft holds a hardware launch every October, and the one product that's refreshed every year is the Surface Pro. While the Surface Laptop 5 arrived after a year and a half, there's one product that no one expected to see until recently, and that's the Surface Studio 2 Plus. The last time we saw the all-in-one was when the Surface Studio 2 was released, back in October 2018.

Dell's Latitude 9000 series is meant to compete with the likes of HP's EliteBook 1000 series and Lenovo's ThinkPad X1 series. And while it's the newest of those three brands, Dell is really beginning to impress as the brand comes into maturity. The Dell Latitude 9430 2-in-1 is a phenomenal laptop.

Google Pixel Watch hands-on: It looks so much better in person

The Google Pixel Watch is a stunning smartwatch that is hard to believe as a first-generation product. Here are our early thoughts!

Alongside the Google Pixel 7 series, Google also introduced its first-ever smartwatch -- the Google Pixel Watch. It's been shrouded in controversy ever since its first unveiling thanks to rumors of outdated hardware, a large bezel, and potentially poor battery life. We got to play with it at the company's launch event in New York City, and I have to admit that I'm a bit of a believer now.

Google Pixel 7 series hands-on: Doubling down on a winning formula

The Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro have finally launched, and we had the opportunity to briefly use them. Here are our first impressions!

The Google Pixel 7 series is here, and like last year, there are two devices -- a Google Pixel 7, and a Google Pixel 7 Pro. I recently had hands-on time with both devices at the company's launch event in New York City. While I can't talk about a lot of details just yet, I'm able to talk about the brief time I spent with these smartphones at the launch event itself. These two smartphones debut the company's new Google Tensor G2, which has a few key differences over last year's Tensor chipset.

Lenovo laptop with blue lights in background

My favorite laptop this year was the Lenovo Yoga 9i, so when the company reached out with the non-convertible version of it, I was all-in. Naturally, I had already seen it in-person when it was announced, so I knew about the differences between the two. Along with the shiny gold (also known as Oatmeal, for some reason) soft touch edges, this unit has a glass-covered lid.

Angled view of AMD Ryzen 7950X installed on a motherboard

It shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone, but AMD's new Ryzen 7000 processors are the best CPUs that you can get right now. After all, these things tend to go in cycles, so it should be no surprise that the new chips comfortably outperform Intel's last-gen CPUs.

Front view of HP Elite Dragonfly G3

The HP Elite Dragonfly G3 is a massive departure from its predecessors, but as always, HP knocks it out of the park. Ultimately, it's really hard to think of anything wrong with this laptop. It's just so good. It's got a 3:2 display with an OLED option, Intel's U-series processors, a big old 68WHr battery, and it all weighs in at under a kilogram.

While it seemed like we knew everything about Microsoft's Surface Pro 9, a new rumor has emerged from the folks at WinFuture. The new Windows tablet is set to arrive with Intel's U-series CPUs, contrary to previous rumors of P-series processors. Also, it might actually come in different colors.
