How to change the emoji on Android
Communication on the internet has evolved a lot over the years. We’re always looking for ways to use more than just text in our text conversations. Back in the day, “emoticons” were all the rage, but now we have emoji. Android manufacturers all have their own emoji design. The emojis on the Samsung Galaxy S9 look different than what’s on the Pixel 2. If you want to change the emoji on your Android device, there are a few things you can do.
Unfortunately, there isn’t a non-root method to change the emojis on the system level. You can only change how they look on an app-by-app basis. This means you can only change how they look when you’re using specific apps, but the emojis will not change on the system level.
If you have an unrooted Android Oreo device, the best way to do this is with Substratum. We have a tutorial for getting Substratum up and running and for using it to change the emojis in WhatsApp and Telegram. The process does involve plugging your phone into a computer and typing in a few ADB commands, but it’s easy enough for anyone to do.

If you have a rooted device, we can change the emojis on the system level. This will change the way they look in any app you use. Obviously, this is the preferred method for really changing the emojis, but not everyone can root their device. If you’re interested in rooting your device, check out our directory of root guides. We’ll be using a root app called Emoji Switcher. This app will let you use the emoji style from pretty much any manufacturer you want.
- Install Emoji Switcher from the Play Store
- Open the app and grant root access
- Tap the drop-down box and select an emoji style
- The app will download the emojis and then ask to reboot
- You should see the new style after the phone reboots!
To revert the emoji style, simply tap the three-dot menu icon in the top right and “Restore default.” That’s all there is to it.
