Xiaomi is already working on MIUI 12, and very likely on Android 11 too. However, the version number of Xiaomi’s MIUI skin doesn’t have a 1:1 correspondence with the underlying Android layer. For example, a bunch of phones from the Chinese OEM has recently picked up the Android 10 update under the same MIUI 11 skin they had before. Two more devices are now eligible for the stable Android 10 OTA – the Mi Max 3 and the Mi 8 Lite.

Android Pie-based MIUI 11 update landed on this device duo earlier, which is now made feature-complete with the introduction of Android 10. The current global builds, MIUI V11.0.1.0.QEDMIXM for the Mi Max 3 and MIUI V11.0.1.0.QDTMIXM for the Mi 8 Lite, are shipped with February 2020 security patches. This is the second major Android version upgrade for these phones and it might be the last one as well. The resemblance isn’t as uncanny as it sounds, as the Mi Max 3 and the Mi 8 Lite even share a common kernel tree under the hood, albeit Xiaomi has yet to publish Android 10 kernel sources for them.

Besides the regular Recovery ROM, the company has also made the Fastboot flashable firmware packages public. Users no longer need an authorized Mi Account to flash the former, which indicates the stable nature of the builds.

The strategy of making ‘Lite’ variants of the flagship lineup seems to be beneficial for the OEM, but we can’t say the same for the ‘Max’ series. The legacy of Xiaomi phablets is now flowing through the Redmi Note series, marking the recently launched Redmi Note 9 Pro Max as the spiritual successor to the Mi Max 3.
