The biggest drawing force collectively in the Moto Z lineup is the 'modular' case functionality. All the devices are designed with a view to allow interchangeable snap-on back panels that add in functionality that was previously absent on the device. Once the Moto Z devices were announced, what Motorola needed to do was to get more developers and customers on board to avoid dwindling interest which plagued the LG G5.

For this purpose, Motorola, Lenovo, and Verizon teamed up with Indiegogo to give developers the chance to create new Moto Mods. Lenovo has been hosting several hackathons across the globe to encourage developers to come up with new ideas, while platforms like Indiegogo provide an infrastructure to bring these ideas to reality. The Edge Moto Mod is one such idea which is hoping to make its transition from a prototype to a full-fledged consumer product.

Edge claims to be the world's first RGB lighting system for Moto Z smartphones. This Moto Mod, like every other Moto Mod, snaps onto the back of the devices in the Moto Z lineup, and adds in RGB lighting for notifications right onto the device's frame. Utilizing the mid frame for notifications would allow users to view their notification regardless of how their phone is placed on the surface. Multiple individual LEDs come together to give a fully customized experience for notification control. What's more, the Mod also promises support for third-party application notifications.

The module is conceptualized in two variants: Edge Force and Edge Air. Edge Force adds in an extra 2,000 mAh of battery power, while the Edge Air adds in wireless charging capabilities and is thinner than the Edge Force. The functionalities co-exist with the RGB notification system.

As of writing this, the Edge Moto Mod project has already reached $10,429 of its $15,000 funding goal, with a month left to cover up the deficit. The current backing option available puts the Edge Moto Mod at $59 plus Shipping. So if this Mod interests you, head on over to the Indiegogo campaign.
