watchOS 10 review: Revealing Apple Watch's true colors

Apple Watch autonomy is a single step away now.

By

Back in June, Apple previewed watchOS 10, along with iOS 17, iPadOS 17, and macOS Sonoma. This time around, the biggest visual changes revolve around the Apple Watch, as the Cupertino firm completely overhauled the operating system. It also introduced some other handy features that further supercharge the company's wearables. And now that we've had our hands on the watchOS 10 beta for around three months, it's time to reveal what this update is all about through our dedicated review. In a nutshell, watchOS 10 makes using the Apple Watch day-to-day less mundane, thanks to a slew of colorful interfaces that make the OS and its apps more engaging.

A new iPhone 15 Pro design will be what wins me over

There's a lot of talk about the iPhone 15 Pro, from the expected USB-C port to the thinner bezels, but there's one other thing I'm looking for.

Apple is expected to debut the newest iPhones this week, and while we only still have rumors, it's expected that the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max will feature USB-C ports and slimmer display bezels, in addition to an improved camera system on the larger model.

10 years ago, Apple announced an iconic iPhone and a major disappointment

10 years ago to this day, Apple announced one of its most successful iPhones ever. It also launched one of its most disappointing ones.

Apple is likely to reveal the iPhone 15 series at its upcoming September event, which can be exciting, but the launch of a new iPhone is not what it was years ago. Users today can only expect Apple to bring incremental upgrades or too-little-too-late features like a USB-C port.

One UI 6 hands-on

Samsung's One UI 6 beta has landed, and it brings a handful of exciting features and some improvements over the One UI 5.1. It wasn't the smoothest rollout, but the update is finally available for all Galaxy S23 series devices across a few countries. I've been using the One UI 6 beta on my Galaxy S23 for about a week now, and my overall experience has been mostly positive. Switching to One UI 6 has made me use my Galaxy S23 a lot more than the Pixel 7 and the Galaxy Z Flip 5 running One UI 5.1, which is a good indication of my overall experience. There are a few things about the software that I like more than the others, so I decided to highlight some of my favorite One UI 6 changes and improvements below. Let's dive in!

5 features Android borrowed from iOS
4 hardware changes the iPhone made before Android phones

Apple has been a trendsetter for years with its iPhones, especially when compared to Android

Apple is notorious these days for arriving late to the party, particularly in the mobile department. The company has a history of taking its sweet, sweet time before launching new additions to the masses and catching up on current trends, like a USB-C port. While iOS users consequently miss out on the latest mobile technology available on some Android phones, they still get to enjoy a stable, familiar experience.

Casetify PowerThru Power Bank review: An expensive but good-looking MagSafe portable charger

Casetify's PowerThru Power Bank is a simple, portable charger that'll fit your personal style, even if it doesn't impress you on the spec sheet.

When Apple introduced MagSafe to the iPhone back in 2020, a lot of new features and great accessories became available. Even product categories that already existed were reimagined with Apple's magnetic connection system, like the portable charger and power bank. Previously, you needed to carry a portable charger and power cord to juice up your phone in a pinch. But with MagSafe, all that's required for emergency charging is a compact power bank no larger than your average bifold wallet. There are a lot of MagSafe power banks out there, including the subject of today's review, Casetify's PowerThru Power Bank.

4 reasons I am more excited about the regular iPhone 15 than the Pro models

The regular iPhone 15 is shaping up to be a solid step up this year.

Apple's annual iPhone event is right around the corner, meaning all eyes are set on the Cupertino tech giant to see what kind of iPhones it has in store this year. The company is all set to introduce the latest iPhones alongside the Apple Watch Series 9 and even an Apple Watch Ultra 2.

5 reasons I use Apple Music as my everyday music streaming service

Although Apple Music still has some drawbacks, even in 2023, I use it daily

People have had their qualms with Apple Music since it was first unveiled in 2015. For those unfamiliar, Apple's purchase of Beats in 2014 was partially driven by the company's desire to create a music streaming service. Beats Music, an already prominent streaming service, then became Apple Music. Though the app has come a long way since then, it still has some considerable drawbacks, as pointed out by our Apple editor.

5 biggest iPhone milestones to date

The iPhone has had some pretty iconic moments over the years.

Since 2007, Apple has been putting out new iPhone models every single year. At this point, the world has gotten its hands on over three dozen unique models that feature different specifications, price tags, and exclusives. Naturally, many of these upgrades have been incremental or not worth mentioning. For this reason, we will be shedding most of these releases to focus on the five biggest milestones in iPhone history.

The Moto 360 came out 9 years ago and set the standard for Wear OS devices today

The Moto 360 arrived on Sep. 05, 2014, as the first of many Android Wear smartwatches that followed soon after.

Wear OS watches come in multiple shapes and sizes now, but the one that laid the groundwork for Wear OS and took off in a big way was released almost a decade ago. I am talking about the original Moto 360 smartwatch that arrived nine years ago on September 5th, 2014. It was a pioneer in the smartwatch market and set the standard for many of the devices that followed. The Moto 360 was not without its flaws, but it truly set the pace for the development of Android Wear watches and became one of the best-selling smartwatches of all time.

They're both really good in their segments but there's one that I've been using more than the other.

Samsung's foldable phone lineup has come a long way from the original ones that were released a few years ago. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 and the Galaxy Z Fold 5 both represent the best of what the company has to offer right now in the foldable phone space, and they are — in many ways — superior to their peers in the same segment. They have drastically different designs, but their differences go beyond just their folding mechanisms.

4 reasons the Pixel experience is overrated

Almost everybody praises Google's Pixel software. While I like chunks of it, some parts are just frustrating to use

Ever since their debut in 2016, Google Pixel phones have been beloved among Android enthusiasts thanks to their cameras and software. While I fully agree Pixel cameras are indeed great — some of the best smartphone cameras on the market — I find Pixel phones' software, particularly the UX, to be overrated.

5 reasons I don't care about the iPhone 15 series

As an iPhone 14 Pro user, I'm more interested in the iPhone 16 series.

The iPhone 15 series is launching in a couple of weeks. And while we're undoubtedly excited about what Apple has to show, I'm more interested in next year's launch. I currently use the company's best iPhone, the iPhone 14 Pro, and I'm not tempted to upgrade this year whatsoever. That's because the iPhone 16 Pro could be worth the wait, and the five rumored iPhone 15 Pro upgrades simply don't apply to me or others who already have an iPhone 14 Pro model.

Apple going up against the UK government could be enough to thwart data encryption threats

In response to the U.K. government's proposed IPA changes, Apple is threatening to pull out from the market, along with WhatsApp and Signal.

For years, Apple has prided itself on its privacy and security guidelines. That Apple is the benchmark in this area is not an understatement. No matter which product release or update is announced, Apple will invariably touch on security and privacy on stage, with the Vision Pro being the latest example. For those who value these aspects, Apple is the go-to brand. Sadly, though, apart from the end users, not everyone holds user privacy that high of a regard. According to recent reports, that seems to be the case with the U.K. government.

Flip phones aren't the compact alternative to small phones we hoped they'd be

Compact phones are more than just tiny, pocketable phones that are easier to carry around.

2023 has been great for foldable phones, with plenty of great options from the likes of Samsung, Motorola, Xiaomi, and more. There are more foldables on the horizon, and it finally feels like we're getting to see how good the foldable future can be. You currently have to pick between a book-style foldable and a Flip phone, a.k.a. Clamshell foldable. Flip phones are arguably more popular on the market right now, mainly because they're more affordable than their book-style counterparts, and they're also more fun to use. But there is one thing you need to know about the Flip phones, though, and I am here to tell you just that.

5 reasons the Apple Watch is the best wearable

The Apple Watch offers an unmatched set of features and health sensors that arguably makes it the best wearable on the market.

In a world where a number of brands put out countless excellent smartwatch models, finding the right pick can be tricky. However, in my personal opinion, the new Apple Watches have become the best for most users. While their compatibility is currently limited to iOS only (and that will likely never change), they still offer the most advanced features for Apple users and are uncontested in a lot of key areas, including the five below.

flagships
The iPhone has won over casual users. Android flagships must win over enthusiasts to survive.

The iPhone is becoming the “default” phone for most people around the world. The future of Android flagships looks grim in comparison.

During a press conference addressing the recent surge of car thefts in New York City in May, Mayor Eric Adams urged citizens to buy AirTags for their cars. When told by a reporter that AirTags do not work with Android phones, Adams responded, "Why would anyone have [an Android phone]?" His ignorant response — there are over 130 million Android users in the U.S., according to the most recent research — was only met with a bit of backlash, mostly on Twitter and a couple Android sites. The mayor of one of the biggest cities in America giving ridiculous advice and dismissing valid concerns wasn't that big of a deal because many Americans felt the same way.

Belkin MagSafe Camera Mount review: Unparalleled value for iPhone users

Belkin's camera mount, designed to work with Continuity Camera on macOS, also happens to be one of the best-value accessories you can buy.

By

When Apple unveiled macOS Ventura last year, one of the more interesting features showcased was the Continuity Camera, which allowed users who owned an iPhone and a Mac to use their phone's rear camera as their Mac's video feed. Since many of the best phones also have great cameras, Continuity Camera seemed like a genius idea, particularly useful for people who work remotely. But surprisingly, Apple didn't make a mount that would actually attach the iPhone and Mac. Instead, the company announced that Belkin would be making it.

iOS 17 tidbits: A comprehensive list of lesser known features

iOS 17 offers plenty of smaller, lesser known additions, and we've listed them below.

First previewed during WWDC23, iOS 17 powers all new iPhone models, including the iPhone 14 Pro Max. And while Apple mostly focused on communication upgrades in FaceTime and Messages during its keynote, there are still plenty of smaller introductions and lesser known features that further enhance and supercharge the iPhone's operating system.

The Galaxy Z Fold 5 main display

Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 5 represents the best of what Samsung has to offer in the foldable space right now. It's among the best foldable phones out there in 2023. It is a spectacular device even with the growing competition. Samsung has also made some notable improvements to the last year's model, improving the overall experience of using the device. There's no doubt the Galaxy Z Fold 5 is a fantastic phone for advanced users, but there are a few features and settings I recommend exploring to make the most of this versatile device. Here are five settings I wish someone told me before I started using the Galaxy Z Fold 5.
