WWDC22 is around the corner, and we're expecting to see the previews of iOS 16 and macOS 13 during the main keynote. However, Apple is not done with iOS 15 and macOS Monterey just yet. Following the release of iOS 15.5 and macOS 12.4 to the public earlier this week, the company has now seeded the first developer betas of the upcoming iOS 15.6 and macOS 12.5.

iOS 15.6 beta 1

This week's stable releases didn't bring much to the table -- apart from Podcasts additions, bug fixes, and some minor changes. And this is expected since these annual versions are maturing and will soon stop receiving major updates. At this point, Apple is likely fixing leftover bugs and preparing for the upcoming releases that it will reveal during WWDC. We still don't know what iOS 15.6 and macOS 12.5 include. The company could potentially be making some last-minute, under-the-hood changes. Alternatively, it could surprise us with a few significant features as it prepares to move onto iOS 16 and macOS 13.

To update your devices to these beta builds, you must be enrolled in Apple's developer beta program. The update should then automatically appear where you would usually find it:

  • Launch the Settings app.
  • Click on General.
  • Tap on Software Update.
  • Wait for the page to refresh.
  • Once the update appears, click on Download and Install.
  • Make sure your device remains connected to power during the installation process to ensure it doesn't shut down unexpectedly. If the update is interrupted due to a power loss, you might end up with a bricked device.

We don't advise users to install the first developer beta on their daily drivers. That's because we still don't know what to expect from this update. It could potentially be buggy and push you to rolling back to the stable channel. Ultimately, you could always take the risk if you think it's worth it.
