The Google Pay app for the Indian region was recently rebuilt from the ground up with Flutter. The updated app was released in September this year, and it featured some minor design changes. Now, Google is rolling out a new icon for the app with its latest beta update.

The new Google Pay icon was first spotted by Twitter user @isumantada (via 9to5Google), who also shared a screenshot of the app's updated splash screen. As you can see in the attached screenshots, the new icon looks like a 3D version of the Squarespace icon made using the four Google colors. While the icon follows Google's minimalist icon aesthetic, it's a far cry from the current Google Pay icon, and that might cause unnecessary confusion among users.

Here's Google's Caesar Sengupta explaining why Google Pay for India has a new icon:

It's worth noting that Google recently released new icons for several of its apps and services, including Gmail, Google Calendar, Drive, Docs, and Meet. And while many users expressed their displeasure with these icons as well, at least they look somewhat similar to the outgoing icons. The new Google Pay icon, on the other hand, just doesn't make sense.
