Google has just launched the long-awaited Google Pixel 6 series. There's a whole lot to love about both devices, such as both of them being the first to incorporate Google's new Tensor chipset. With that Tensor chipset comes something even more interesting for a lot of users -- five years of software updates.

The Google Pixel 6 series will get three years of OS upgrades and five years of security patches. That means not only will it be one of the first to get Android 13 next year, but it'll be the first to get Android 14 and Android 15 as well. After that, it will get two more years of security patches. At the moment, Google hasn't shared details about the frequency and categories of updates for the new Pixel models. It says that the "frequency and categories of updates will depend on the capabilities and needs of the hardware."

Google's support window is the longest for any Android smartphone yet, beating out update windows from the likes of Samsung, OnePlus, and Xiaomi. Google's smartphones get major upgrades before any other device manufacturer and also get the latest developer previews and betas of new Android versions.

Google says this is "thanks to Tensor", and that it is "at least" five years of security updates. That leaves some wiggle room for the company to extend the support window of the Pixel 6 series in the future. It's a shame that Google doesn't guarantee a longer support window for major updates, as some people would like to hold onto their smartphones for a long time.

Nonetheless, Google's promise to deliver security patches for five years is impressive. It's still a cut above a lot of the competition. Although Apple's iPhones get six years of updates, in the Android realm, the Google Pixel 6 series is one of the best.

The Pixel 6 comes with Google's new Tensor chip, a modern design, and flagship cameras.
