The Google Pixel Launcher received automatic dark/light themes with the release of Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL back in October of 2017. The feature adjusts the theme of a few elements based on the wallpaper color. Users can't manually choose the theme and it doesn't change the Settings app. People have been begging for a full dark theme since forever. Now, as it turns out, Google takes this one step further by letting us manually trigger the dark theme in the Pixel Launcher. So, you don't have to depend on your daily wallpaper to decide what the color scheme will be like today.

Android Police noticed that someone added an issue in the Issue Tracker back in March. Today, a Googler marked this issue as fixed and added a comment:

We have added support for a Dark theme to be applied to quick settings and launcher under Settings -> Display -> Device Theme. It will be available in a future Android build.

Yay! We still aren't close to getting a full dark theme support on Android, but even one tiny step fills my heart with optimism. It has always felt weird that a dark theme exists in some capacity, but users could not manually toggle it. This feature will most likely be activated in the next developer preview, which will be released near the end of this month.
