Group conversations from Hangouts will soon appear in Google Chat
If you use Hangouts for group conversations, some important changes will be implemented in the coming weeks. The changes come on the heels of a much larger initiative, which will see Google eventually replace Hangouts with Chat by the first half of 2021.
Google on Monday said group conversations in Hangouts will begin to appear in Google Chat over the coming weeks. Currently, regular Google Account users can see their one-on-one Hangouts conversations in Google Chat but can’t see conversations from group chats. Just last week, Google killed group video calling in Hangouts, instead pushing users to use Google Meet.
Google said it is making a few other changes to how group conversations work in Google Chat:
- Add and change members. You’ll be able to add and change members of new group conversations.
- Different Google Vault retention policy. If you have a Vault retention policy set, the updated group conversations will respect a different retention policy.
- Compatibility with classic Hangouts. Group conversations in Hangouts will begin to appear in Google Chat over the coming weeks.
The changes are part of Google’s commitment to migrating Hangouts conversations and saved history to Chat. “These changes further ensure compatibility between classic Hangouts and Chat to make migrating your users as seamless as possible,” Google said.
As for improvements to group conversations as a whole, Google said you can now add new members to a chat; the group chat will see a message announcing the new member. The new member will be able to see the entire conversation, Google said, even messages sent before they entered, giving them the opportunity to easily catch up.
If a group conversation was created before December 3, you can create an updated conversation with the same group by using the “Start a new chat” option.
Google said the new features will be available to Google Workspace Business Starter, Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard, and Enterprise Plus, as well as G Suite Basic, Business, Education, Enterprise for Education, and Nonprofits customers.
