Nokia-Branded Phones Reportedly Outsold Phones from Google, HTC, Sony, Lenovo, and OnePlus in Q4 2017
It’s not easy for upstart OEMs to challenge Apple and Samsung’s global smartphone dominance, but HMD Global has done rather well lately. According to Counterpoint Research, the Nokia licensee nabbed 1 percent of the market and sold 4.4 million smartphones in the fourth quarter of 2017 — more than HTC, Sony, Google, Alcatel, OnePlus, Lenovo, and others.

Interestingly, according to Counterpoint, HMD Global has made major progress in Vietnam (as well as most Middle East markets), the United Kingdom, Russia, and other European and Asian markets. China, India, and the United States have proven to be a bit of a challenge, due to the maturity of those countries’ smartphone markets. But HMD managed to increase Nokia’s share of the feature phone market to 15 percent, making it the top feature phone brand globally.

The report’s findings are all the more impressive considering how new HMD Global is to the Android smartphone market. Since it inked a deal with Nokia several years ago, the company has released smartphones across low-end, mid-range, and high-end price segments. That’s not a particularly novel strategy — many OEMs sell smartphones at a number of different price tiers — but it speaks to the strength of Nokia’s brand.
