Google’s Android One initiative has been generating a lot of buzz in the smartphone realm lately. It all started with the launch of Xiaoimi Mi A1 in India earlier this month. Then just last week we learned about Motorola’s rumored Android One device. And it now looks like one more OEM will be joining them: HTC.

Well-known HTC leaker LabTooFeR has revealed on Twitter that HTC is planning to release a mid-range Android One device. Codenamed HTC Ocean_Life, the device will be a rebranded version of the rumored HTC U11 Life rather than a completely new device. Xiaomi took a similar approach with the Mi 5X to create the Xiaomi Mi A1 and Motorola is also expected to follow the same path by rebranding the Moto X4.

On the software side, the HTC Ocean_Life will bring stock Android O with Sense 9.0_A1, similar to what Xiaomi did on the Mi A1, and HTC will retain some of its signature features such as EdgeSense, Usonic, Zoe and their stock camera application to differentiate itself from other One devices out there.

Replying to the tweet, notable leaker Evan Blass corroborated the news. The image that he shared is of the existing HTC U11 device.

LabTooFeR didn’t mention specifications of the device in his tweet, but if previous leaks of the HTC U11 Life are anything to go by, the HTC’s Android One device may feature a 5.2-inch FullHD display, 16MP front and back cameras, a Snapdragon 630 SoC, Bluetooth 5.0 and a 2,600mAh battery.

We have no information on the release date as of yet, but hopefully HTC will launch its first Android One device sooner rather than later. So far, Android One is truly building an impressive comeback with a salvo of new devices from prominent manufacturers. Who do you think will join the Android One roster next?
