Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC isn't exactly winning any awards in 2019, but the company is still trying to keep up with the competition. Today, the brand announced two new mid-range smartphones devices, the HTC U19e and HTC Desire 19+, for its homeland, Taiwan.

The first device on our list is the HTC U19e. Design-wise, it has larger bezels than what we've seen on other devices, but at least it doesn't have a notch. It packs a 6.0-inch OLED panel at 1080x2160 resolution. Internally, you'll find the Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 and 6 GB of RAM which are more than enough to power your apps. It also has 128GB of internal storage. The device has a respectable 3,930 mAh battery, too. As for the camera, you'll find a dual rear 12MP f/1.8 aperture lens + 20MP f/2.6 aperture telephoto lens. On the front, you'll find a 24MP f/2.0 aperture lens and, surprisingly, a 2MP iris scanner for secure facial recognition.

The HTC U19e

The next device on our list is the HTC Desire 19+. It is less powerful than the U19e with the MediaTek Helio P35 SoC and 4GB starting RAM option. The battery is 3,850 mAh in capacity while the display is a 6.2-inch HD+ water-drop notch panel. This device has a triple rear camera system with a 13MP lens, 8MP ultra wide-angle lens, and a 5MP depth sensor. Though, there is only one 16MP camera on the front.

HTC Desire 19+

The HTC U19e will arrive in two colors: Extraordinary Purple and Modest Green. Sales start today in Taiwan at a price of 14,900 NT$, which is about $475. The HTC Desire 19+ will retail for 9,990 NT$ (~$315) and 10,990 NT$ (~$350) for the 4GB/64GB and 6GB/128GB models.

The U19e seems like a decent competitor to the Google Pixel 3a series, although the Pixel 3a likely has the better camera and definitely better software support given the uncertainty around HTC's future. The once-popular brand is still kicking, and we hope that it can eventually return to its former glory. But, don't hold your breath.
