January 2020 security patches rolling out with numerous fixes for Pixel devices
Google is kicking off the first week of 2020 with another Android security bulletin, right on schedule. After delaying the previous update for some Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL owners, the new January update should go out to all Pixel owners (except for the Pixel and Pixel XL) on time. The January 2020 security patch includes fixes for a lot of security vulnerabilities and exploits. It’s worth noting that most of them are categorized as high severity vulnerabilities, so these patches will protect your device against the recently disclosed security vulnerabilities.
Apart from the various security improvements for the Android platform, Linux kernel, and vendor components, Google is also including some functional updates for Pixel devices. As outlined below, Google fixed some bugs on the Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL, Pixel 3a, Pixel 3a XL, Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL devices. One of those annoyances was a notification ghosting issue, which I can confirm is now fixed on the Pixel 3. Another bug we spotted was the purple color shifting at lower brightnesses on the Pixel 4.
If you’re already running the latest December 2019 Android security patch, this should be a pretty small update for you. If you have a Pixel 3 or 3 XL, the update may be larger as may receive a joint December 2019/January 2020 security update. And to no one’s surprise, Essential was quick to follow up with an update for the PH-1, while also including audio improvements in the package.
