Unless you've been living under a rock, you're probably familiar with the LineageOS custom ROM. After all, it is, quite possibly, the most widely used Android-based aftermarket software/custom ROM out there. LineageOS is the spiritual successor to the extinct CyanogenMod project, but despite similarities in their philosophy and the fact that LineageOS simply took off where CyanogenMod left off, there are still some stark differences. Particularly, CyanogenMod worked with nightly builds which were automatically compiled, whereas LineageOS builds were released in a weekly basis. This is changing today, though.

Starting today, LineageOS 15.1 builds, which are based on Android 8.1 Oreo, will be released on a nightly basis, meaning that those using official LineageOS 15.1 on their device will begin receiving daily updates from now on. This means that, if a new feature gets rolled out to the stable LineageOS branch, all devices will be able to get that feature on day one. Same with security updates, upstreams, and so on. This wasn't possible before because of technical limitations regarding the Lineage team's infrastructure, but as the ROM kept growing and growing in popularity and number of devices, so has their infrastructure.

On the other hand, LineageOS 14.1 (based on Android 7.1 Nougat) builds will be deprioritized to make room for nightly 15.1 builds: while they will still be released to supported devices, builds will now come on a monthly basis instead of a weekly basis. As 14.1 is based on a legacy version of Android, it barely gets new features or substantial improvements aside security patches, so monthly builds will still allow 14.1 users to get those security patches on time.

This is great news for users as we get closer to the final LineageOS 16.0 release and stable builds, which will be based on Android 9 Pie. This also means that the servers will be busier than ever, but if something does go wrong, it should be fixed fairly quickly. You can check out the relevant commit here.
