MediaTek is working on a 7nm 5G-capable chip that’s more powerful than the Helio P90

When it comes to flagship SoCs, the Android side of the market is dominated by the likes of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon, Samsung’s Exynos and Huawei’s HiSilicon Kirin SoCs. MediaTek is not really the preferred name for cutting edge features, as it chooses to focus more on the entry level, budget and mid-range segments. But that does not stop the Taiwanese semi-conductor giant to play catch-up on specifications and still continue to provide a value package.

In an interview with Android Authority, MediaTek’s Vice President of Corporate Sales and Business Development, Mr. Finbarr Moynihan has confirmed that it is working on a 7nm, 5G capable chipset, with an announcement expected this year. This SoC will be positioned “towards the higher end” of the market, and will be more capable than the Helio P90 SoC that is built on a 12m process.

With regards to 5G, MediaTek has its own M70 5G modem that was revealed last year. Manufacturers can get their hands on this modem by the end of this year, with devices expected to launch by the second half of 2020.

MediaTek executives did not conclusively comment that the company would be building a proper flagship SoC in terms of performance. As history would suggest, MediaTek’s offerings, namely as part of its X-series, have been unable to compete toe-to-toe against flagship SoCs from Qualcomm and Samsung. Comparatively, MediaTek’s SoCs offer lesser performance prowess and higher heat output, but higher cost-effectiveness, which allows them to become a popular choice for cheap smartphones. MediaTek’s entry into the 5G space, coupled with the 7nm fabrication process, would help pave the way for cheaper 5G smartphones and greater market proliferation of this new networking technology. So even if the new MediaTek SoC may not be the most powerful chip on the block, it would still have its own role to play.
