The Motorola Moto X4 was one of the devices on Lenovo’s Android Pie update list. As is the norm, Lenovo had not specified the exact timelines on which the mentioned devices would be receiving their official Android 9 updates, so the wait could have ranged from anywhere from the announced “fall” season to over a year.

Thankfully, for the Moto X4, the update is arriving sooner rather than later. The Android 9 Pie update for the Moto X4 is currently being soak tested by beta testers in India.

The Android Pie OTA update comes with the build number PPW29.69-17 and is ~1.15GB in size. As is the norm with Motorola updates, the update will roll out gradually to more regions once the soak test is successful and no major bugs are found in the update. The Android 9 update will bring in several new features to the Moto X4. including the new gesture navigation, App Actions and App Slices support, Adaptive Battery, and more.

While Motorola is a shadow of its former self under Lenovo’s control (as far as updates go), it is good to see new stable OS updates reach more devices. The Moto X4 was launched with Android 7. 1 Nougat in August 2017, so the mid-range smartphone receiving Android 9 is good news indeed. However, this may turn out to be the last major software update for the phone, unless Lenovo has an unusual change of heart for its non-flagship device. For now, enjoy the latest Android dessert on your Moto X4 when it arrives.
