Not Forgotten: OnePlus X gets a taste of Nougat thanks to CyanogenMod 14.1 Nightlies
Developers were first to publish Android 6.0 Marshmallow for the device, with OnePlus eventually following suit. While some users of the OnePlus X are wary of continued software support, developers have been working hard to ensure that the OnePlus X is not forgotten. The latest milestone in custom ROM development has just been reached: Cyanogenmod 14.1 nightlies.
If you take a look through the OnePlus X forums, you’ll notice that there have been a few Nougat-based ROMs out for the OnePlus X. Not to discredit these releases or to credit Cyanogenmod for being the first to release Nougat for the OnePlus X, but official support from the Cyanogenmod project is always welcome as it provides a stable code-base for other custom ROM developers to work off of. In addition, many users are wary of running unofficial firmware on their phones, but may re-consider their stance when presented with a ROM with the history of Cyanogenmod.
Notably, this release skips Android 7.0 and jumps straight to Android 7.1. Given all the improvements in Android 7.1 such as GIF keyboard, touch latency reduction, and app shortcuts, it’s certainly a nice move forward for OnePlus X owners. It is unlikely that we will see official Android Nougat for the OnePlus X, due to the lack of updated graphics drivers for the device from Qualcomm resulting in the device failing to meet the graphics compatibility requirements in Nougat. Thus, unofficial releases such as these are what we’ll have to deal with, but given the track record of Cyanogenmod and developers on our forums – OnePlus X owners will have little to worry about.
