[Update: Nubia now confirms Pie] The 2017 Nubia Z17 flagship will not get an Android Pie update

Update 12/5/18: Nubia has apologized for the confusion and now states that they will release an Android Pie update.

The Nubia Z17 is a device with specifications including the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 mobile platform, 8GB of RAM, 128GB of UFS 2.1 storage and Qualcomm Quick Charge 4+ support. These specifications may not seem mind-blowing in late 2018, but they definitely turned heads when the device launched in June more than a year ago.

The Nubia Z17 launched with Android 7.1 Nougat out of the box, with Nubia UI 5.0 on top. This was expected, as Android 8.0 Oreo was officially released by Google in August 2017, so the device couldn’t have released with a new Android version months before Google released it. Subsequently, Nubia updated the device to Android 8.1 Oreo, with Nubia UI 6.0 on top.

However, the Nubia team has now announced that the Nubia Z17 will not receive any further Android version upgrades. The development team over at Nubia (which is a smaller sub-brand within ZTE) needs to focus on other devices, thereby making it infeasible to continue working on the Z17. This applies to major Android version upgrades beyond Android 8.1, implying that the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 flagship smartphone will not officially receive an Android 9 Pie upgrade, nor any other versions beyond that.

Development will still continue on the Nubia UI, so it is not all bad news. The team mentioned that the Nubia Z17 will receive further Nubia UI updates, though no further information has been shared. There is also an unofficial Project Treble zip available for the device, which then allows you to flash any Android Pie GSI with no claimed bugs. So while Android Pie will not officially come to the device, it doesn’t mean that the device will die of software obsolescence anytime soon, which sums up Project Treble and its importance in the Android ecosystem and the fight against fragmentation.
