Official Tor Browser launches on Android

If you’re concerned about privacy and protecting your data online, you may not like Google Chrome. There are tons of web browsers to choose from when it comes to the desktop, but mobile does not have quite as many. Tor is a popular browser for those who like to browse the web without being tracked and now it’s available on Android.

Tor’s claim to fame is that it allows users to browse the web anonymously. It redirects traffic through a network of relays to prevent the activity from being tracked. In order for this to work on Android, users are required to download Orbot, which is a proxy app. It works in conjunction with the Tor Browser to connect to the Tor network.

It’s worth noting that this is an alpha release. Tor hopes to not need the separate Orbot app in the future. Also, if you have been using Orfox, a browser that utilizes the Tor network, it will be sunsetted in favor of the official Tor browser. The stable release is pegged for 2019. Here is what you get with this first release:

Tor Browser isolates each website you visit so third-party trackers and ads can’t follow you. Any cookies automatically clear when you’re done browsing.

Prevent someone watching your connection from knowing what websites you visit. All anyone monitoring your browsing habits can see is that you’re using Tor.

Tor aims to make all users look the same, so Tor Browser for Android makes it difficult for you to be fingerprinted based on your browser and device information.

When you use Tor Browser for Android, your traffic is relayed and encrypted three times as it passes over the Tor network. The network is comprised of thousands of volunteer-run servers known as Tor relays. Watch this animation to learn more about how it works.

With Tor Browser for Android, you are free to access sites your local internet service provider may have blocked.
