After months of speculation, OnePlus has finally taken the wraps off its newest flagship smartphone: The OnePlus 5T. It's not a complete surprise -- the official specs match the leaked ones almost blow-for-blow. But OnePlus had a few surprises in store at its Brooklyn press event on Thursday.

OnePlus 5T Design

One of the highlights of the OnePlus 5T is the display. OnePlus did away with the OnePlus 5's large top and bottom bezels, opting instead for an edge-to-edge design with rounded corners. The OnePlus 5T squeezes a 6.01-inch Full Optic AMOLED panel into a body that's roughly the same size as the OnePlus 5, giving it an effective screen-to-body aspect ratio of 80.5 percent.

There wasn't enough room in the phone's slimmed-down bottom bezel for capacitive buttons or a fingerprint sensor, so OnePlus opted for software navigation buttons and moved the fingerprint sensor -- which unlocks the phone in under 0.2 seconds, OnePlus says -- to the back of the OnePlus 5T above the logo.

The OnePlus 5T's rear is also where you'll find its dual camera setup. The main camera is essentially the same as that of the OnePlus 5 with a 16MP sensor (Sony IMX 398, f/1.7 aperture, 1.12 µm pixel size). But this time the secondary rear camera is a 20MP sensor (Sony IMX 376K, f/1.7 aperture, 1.0 µm pixel size) which will allow it to produce depth-of-field effects that blur image backgrounds while keeping the foreground in focus. The OnePlus 5T's front-facing camera, a 16-megapixel sensor that's also unchanged from the OnePlus 5, captures photos in high dynamic range (HDR).

When it comes to video, the OnePlus 5T captures clips in up to 4K resolution with an Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) algorithm that compensates for shaky movements.

The OnePlus 5T's photography improvements don't stop there. On the software side of things, the camera interface has been redesigned from the ground up. A swipe up from the viewfinder pulls up camera modes such as Pro Mode, which exposes the ISO, white balance, shutter speed, focus and exposure settings, and Portrait Mode, which boasts improved noise reduction and low-light performance.

The OnePlus 5T's camera has one last trick up its sleeve, and it's a significant one: Face unlock. OnePlus's new Advanced Facial Recognition feature lets you secure your phone using your face, much like the Samsung's facial recognition feature on the Galaxy S8. OnePlus says its implementation uses over 100 facial feature identity points to securely unlock the device, and that it unlocks the OnePlus 5T in under 0.2 seconds.

OnePlus didn't skimp on the OnePlus 5T's materials. It's made from sandblasted anodized aluminum featuring OnePlus's signature Horizon Line, and has three separate 14-micron-thick coatings and an oleophobic layer that staves off fingerprints.

OnePlus 5T Specs

In terms of internals, the OnePlus 5T shares a lot in common with the OnePlus 5. It packs Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 system-on-chip -- the same octa-core processor that's in the Samsung Galaxy S8 and LG V30. It has the same graphics chip as the OnePlus 5 -- the Adreno 540 -- and the same amount of RAM (8GB) and UFS 2.1 dual-lane storage (128GB).

OnePlus's Dash Charge quick-charging technology makes a return in the OnePlus 5T. OnePlus says it can fully recharge the phone's 3,300mAh battery in thirty minutes, and that the Dash Charge-compatible adapter and cable included with every OnePlus 5T can carry more current than other fast-charging solutions on the market. You won't find wireless charging on the OnePlus 5T, which OnePlus argues isn't necessary. But the fact remains that Dash Charge is one of the best-performing charging standards on the market.

OnePlus 5T Features

That's just scratching the surface of the OnePlus 5T's features. It has an Alert Slider which quickly switches between Silent Mode, Do Not Disturb Mode, and the standard Ring Mode (OnePlus solicited feedback from the community on the Alert Slider's functionality, but it doesn't look like any of the proposed changes made it into the launch software of the OnePlus 5T), and the OnePlus 5T launches with OxygenOS 4.7, which is based on Android 7.0 Nougat instead of Oreo. (OnePlus says the OnePlus 5T will get a beta update for Android Oreo by December of this year, and the full OTA will roll out in early 2018.)

A major highlight of OxygenOS 4.7 is Sunlight Display. When enabled, the OnePlus 5T adapts to lighting conditions dynamically based on four different scenerios: When you're browsing the gallery, taking a photo, recording a video, or playing a game. Another OxygenOS headliner, Gallery Map, lets you search through photos based on the location where they were captured. And yet another, Parallel Apps, allows you to "clone" an app such as Facebook or Twitter and log into the cloned app with a separate account.

There's plenty to customize in OxygenOS. Hidden Navigation Bar automatically hides the software navigation bars when they're not in use. The OnePlus 5T's screen layout, grid sizes, icons, and buttons can be tweaked to your heart's content. New fingerprint swipe gestures (located in Settings -> Gestures) let you quickly take a photo, pull down the notification shade, or snap a screenshot with a flick of your finger.

Features carried over from the OnePlus 5 to the OnePlus 5T include Reading Mode, which uses greyscale mapping to filter out blue light and automatically adjust the display's sharpness and brightness. The Expanded Screenshot feature grabs a long, top-to-bottom screen capture on command. Gaming Do Not Disturb Mode disables notifications when you're in a particular app or game. Auto Night Mode adjusts the screen's color temperature depending on ambient lighting conditions. App Locker locks data-sensitive apps in a fingerprint-protected folder. And Dark Theme changes the OnePlus 5T's menus and app drawer to black.

The OnePlus 5T is $499/€499/£449, and begins shipping on November 21 in North America and Europe.
