Alleged Render of the OnePlus 5T Appears, Shows Edge to Edge Display
OnePlus had a history of releasing one new flagship smartphone every year, but that changed last year with the release of the OnePlus 3 and the OnePlus 3T. The company leveraged the new chipset from Qualcomm and used the Snapdragon 821 in their refreshed model just before the holidays. Since there isn’t going to be a Snapdragon 836 SoC this year, rumors have started spreading that OnePlus will release the OnePlus 5T with an 18:9 aspect ratio display.
The reductions of smartphone display bezels has become a popular trend lately. Samsung got rid of the side bezels with their Edge variants of the Galaxy Note and Galaxy S series until this year when they used their curved display on both versions. Xiaomi experimented with reduced bezels on the Mi Mix concept phone last year and followed it up with the Mi Mix 2 just recently. Not only are smartphone display bezels shrinking, but a number of them have opted for an 18:9 aspect ratio.
Since there won’t be a Snapdragon 836 SoC this year, rumors have started to spread about the new OnePlus smartphone that would be scheduled right before the holiday season. We’ve seen a number of renders and images published from various sources, and Android Authority just uploaded what is said to be a render of the OnePlus 5T (feature image). They say it is from a “trusted source” and they have been right about a number of things in the past.
While nothing is definitive until an official announcement is made, it does look like OnePlus will be moving to an edge to edge display for the upcoming OnePlus 5. The render shows slim top and bottom bezels that would indicate they’re moving away from the capacitive buttons and there isn’t any indication of a fingerprint sensor in the bottom bezel either.
