OnePlus 7 Pro’s latest HydrogenOS beta adds a new back button gesture
Following the recent launch of the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro, OnePlus has been busying themselves issuing software updates that are fixing the various bugs that come with a new release. While some of these are being pushed straight to OxygenOS – OnePlus’ Android flavor – the more experimental changes are sent to HydrogenOS.
HydrogenOS is essentially the Chinese version of OxygenOS. Like many programs these days, it has a beta channel for its users, giving them early access to the latest features, at the risk of builds not being entirely stable. It’s a fairly standard beta program. One such feature is a new gesture that allows you to go back by swiping from the side of the screen, mentioned by JelleZon on the OnePlus forums. You can see the gesture in action in this video at 3:30.
The feature, which is actually included in Android Q Beta and even iOS, will be a welcome addition to OxygenOS. The OnePlus 7 Pro is OnePlus’ biggest phone yet, at 6.67-inches, so navigating the entire screen can be difficult at times, particularly for those with smaller hands. This makes certain software buttons difficult to access sometimes, so shortcut gestures like this one become all the more important.
What’s interesting, however, is that the feature may soon be rendered useless. The phone displayed in the video above is running Android Pie, and as mentioned earlier, Android Q includes this kind of gesture by default. OnePlus has opted to include the feature in their beta for now, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s replaced once Android Q is released sometime this year.
