OnePlus opens up a beta program for OxygenOS 9’s gallery app
OnePlus is fairly respected in the Android community for its tendency of pushing out updates regularly. But due to its (now) large catalog of devices, pushing individual software updates to upgrade and optimize system apps like its launcher, weather app, icon packs, or the gallery on each smartphone under its belt separately can be a bit taxing. This is why, it started offloading some of its system apps that function the same on all of its devices onto the Google Play Store, back in 2017. This is both convenient to the users as well as the company because apps can be updated more frequently, even if the system is not updated very often.
Now, to augment that experience further, the company is opening up the beta program for its Gallery app. This step should allow enthusiasts to get an early preview of the intended features as well as design changes coming to the app. Additionally, the company can also utilize suggestions and feedback from the users to improve the interface as well as the user experience of the app. this beta program is limited to users running Oxygen OS 9 based on Android 9 Pie. This means that only users with OnePlus 6, OnePlus 6T, OnePlus 5, or OnePlus 5T can use the feature
The OnePlus Gallery app is an easy-to-use app and provides for all of the basic functions that a gallery app must offer. It arranges the available media in the form of a timeline and allows them to be sorted in location-wise or folder-wise views. Additionally, it also comes with an inbuilt photo editor to help users retouch their images without a third-party app (even though many edition tools were removed recently) and also allows them to create cinematic slideshows with background music. The app also supports swipe gestures for easy navigation within the interface such that you can also zoom in and out on the Timeline view to increase or decrease the size of the thumbnails.
If you’re using a OnePlus 3/3T, you may not be able to sign up as beta testers yet, even if they’re running the latest Android Pie beta.
While the app is restricted to OnePlus smartphones, you can use an unofficial version ported by XDA Senior member erayrafet on devices from other OEMs. There is, however, a possibility that it might have all the latest features or functions as the official app.
