Duo and Allo were initially announced back at Google I/O 2016. While the Google Assistant-infused messaging application didn't receive much love, the video calling platform gained a lot of popularity. It has over one billion downloads and 3 million mostly positive reviews on the Google Play Store. It even comes built-in to most Android devices. Google has also integrated it in the Phone application. As far as we're concerned, none of the device manufacturers followed the search giant's lead, until now.
Today, Chinese manufacturer OnePlus announced that Duo will be officially integrated into OxygenOS' dialer, contacts, and messaging apps. As the company describes, the reasoning behind the decision is that Duo received the highest ranking in a call quality study in India. Because of this, Duo will now be a first-party video calling solution on the OnePlus 3/3T, OnePlus 5/5T, and OnePlus 6/6T. These are all the devices that support OxygenOS currently. They will receive the update alongside Android Pie.
The build is already released as OxygenOS 9.0.12 for the OnePlus 6T and OxygenOS 9.0.4 for the OnePlus 6. The OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T models received the updates as beta 23 and 25 just a couple of days ago. There is currently no official information as of when the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T will receive Android Pie as well as Duo integration. According to the information from OnePlus, Google Duo integration will expand to call logs, contacts, dial pad, and messaging.
The integration of Duo in OxygenOS will help both OnePlus and Duo users alike. The video calling platform will gain more popularity, while OxygenOS users will be able to enjoy the seamless video calling experience. As I already mentioned, the feature is available for OnePlus 6 and 6T owners now. If you have older phones from OnePlus, you may have to wait a bit.
