Most would say that OnePlus is one of the few smartphone OEMs that stay on top of updates for their current batch of devices. Granted, they did drop the ball on the OnePlus 2 and the OnePlus X, but since the introduction of the OnePlus 3, it's fair to say that the company has been pushing out updates in a timely manner. Although, they never officially came out and said how long they will be providing their smartphones with updates so this left many wondering if this would continue going forward. Today, the company has announced the OnePlus Software Maintenance Schedule which outlines how long devices will receive new features, Android updates, Android security patches, and bug fixes.

Different smartphone companies go by their own schedule when it comes to Android updates and many of them can't even keep their word on when they will go out. Samsung is a big example of this as it took them three months before they pushed out the first update to their unlocked Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. Then we have those who are using a near stock version of Android, like phones from Essential and Nokia, who are able to push out security updates within the first week of them being released.

OnePlus Software Maintenance Schedule

So now OnePlus has officially come out and said they will support their smartphones with new features, Android versions, Android security patches, and bug fixes for two whole years after the device has been released. This is what we see most companies going with these days as it gives new customers a promise that their new smartphone will receive at least two major Android version updates. Some companies, such as Google, will take things a step further and offer an additional year for security updates and that is what OnePlus says they'll be doing as well. Their security updates for devices in this third year will be rolled out every two months.

This OnePlus Software Maintenance Schedule starts immediately and includes the OnePlus 3, OnePlus 3T, OnePlus 5, OnePlus 5T, and the OnePlus 6. The OnePlus 3 and the OnePlus 3T will receive its last Open Beta update later on in the week and the company plans on pushing out the stable version of that update early next month. These two devices will continue to receive regular OTA updates in November of this year and that will begin the 3rd year time period where it will begin receiving Android security updates every two months.
