The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) is an association of companies who have come together to create, maintain and promote the Qi wireless charging standard. The Qi standard guarantees that any device that is Qi-compatible and comes with the Qi logo will work with any charging surface that also carries the logo, irrespective of the manufacturer or brand. This wireless charging interoperability is a key driving force behind the increased adoption of wireless charging technology as it works in the combined interests of the consumers as well as the manufacturers.
Companies hoping to adopt the Qi wireless charging technology in their products join the WPC months before launching devices with wireless charging support. It has now come to light that OPPO has recently joined the consortium.
It isn't clear when exactly OPPO became a part of the group. We tried looking up Google cache pages and on the Wayback Machine, but without success.
Apple was spotted joining the consortium in February 2017, which is months before the launch of the iPhone X and iPhone 8 series with Qi wireless charging support in September 2017. Similarly, Xiaomi was spotted joining the WPC in September 2017, before eventually launching the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S in March 2018 with wireless charging support.
Currently, none of OPPO's existing devices come with Qi wireless charging. OPPO's membership into the consortium indicates that a future OPPO device will very likely come with Qi wireless charging support. How far away such a device is, that is something that we are unable to determine at this stage.
Since OPPO and OnePlus often share key technologies in their product portfolios, it would not be too far-fetched to expect a future OnePlus device to also sport this technology once an OPPO device does get released with it. The OnePlus 7 is still a few months away, so we'll have to wait and watch to figure out if the OnePlus 7 is the chosen one.
