Pokemon GO is finally getting player-vs-player battling
There have been augmented reality games released on Android in the past. From the same company who released Pokemon GO too, in fact, but it wasn’t until Pokemon GO went live that people really began to see how such a game could impact society. Upon release, Pokemon GO changed the industry with millions of people upgrading to a new phone just so they could play it. Power banks were selling out as quickly as they could be made and pools of players were drawn to certain locations as they were hotspots for catching certain Pokemon. The battle system was the one area that was lacking for the veteran Pokemon fans, but it has just been announced that trainer battles are finally coming to the game Soon™.
Over the last 2 years, the popularity of the game has gone up and down with major spikes happening when new features are added to the game. Trainer battles could be the feature that brings the biggest spike since release. The announcement tells us that “beginning this month” the new trainer battles feature will let players challenge a friend or another trainer at any time. You will need that other players’ “battle code” which is a special QR code that can be scanned.
Once everything is set up, you will assemble a team of three Pokemon and use actual attacks to see who is the better Pokemon trainer. When the battle has been completed, both participants will be given rewards (including a chance at a rare evolution item). However, you will not be allowed to simply go and pick on weaker trainers with your maxed out Pokemon. You will only be able to compete against others who are in the same Trainer Battle League (this determines the CP limit for the participating Pokemon).
Those expecting things to be turn-based battles like the console games will be disappointed though. The announcement says battles are “fast-paced and real-time, so don’t expect to wait your turn.” There is said to still be a level of strategy with this system since your timing could allow you to “deploy a Protect Shield to save your Pokémon from critical damage.”
